Default DVLA/VRO - Putting retention on new car

Probably a silly question but I'm sure someone has gone through this before. I've got a plate on retention and have just bought another car that I want to put it on.

Can I take the V5C/2 along with the V778 and mot to my local VRO and get it assigned or do I have to wait for the V5 to come back in my name?

Just take it all along, you can assign it at the time of transferring ownership.
