Guys I cant stop my self looking at 03-06 plate merc clks I have found 2 very nice 1s 1 is a 06 plate clk 350 amg spec and the other is a 03 plate clk270 cdi amg spec
Right the prob is I know nothing about these cars are they good cars and which car would be the better car it will be a everyday car
But the big BUT is I will have to get rid of the 3 door cosworth for this so I dont want it to be a massive dissapointment
All comments welcome guys please help me out here

I've got the 270cdi motor in my ml 270cdi and I get 30mpg out of that all the time.they can be tuned to stupid power/torque figures and are a piece of piss engine to work on.main issue is the crappy injector seats, they fail easily and can be identified by an Ivor the engine sound under the plastic engine cover.
In fact, remove that cover (2xtorx,I think t30/35) and if you see any sort of tarring/diesel leaks then their most certainly gone,I'd personally replace the injector that's leaking and the seats on the rest as a minimum.
Their just as tuneable and probably more reliable than the BMW 330 motors but do also suffer the same swirl flap issues which is a job and a half to swap but they generally failed well before 100000 so most are ok now.
Autoboxes are good, manual ones ok but mercs are better with an auto, just suit the engine more.
Rust is an issue, everywhere but not usually structural.
Interiors are tough, hide mileage well and their simple to clock so expect it to have happened,I've clocked mine twice and I'd guess it's on 180000 now and the bolsters look the same as when it was on 80000 so be careful.
Electrics are a bit crappy on mercs, but again reliable just loads of annoying niggles which did improve with the newer ones.
The petrol ones are heavy but no worse than a cossie, are pretty boring to drive but perhaps a 230clk would be a better option cos its very tuneable then.
The Cdi 320's are a quick car,200plus bhp and ridiculous torque, again hugely tuneable.
Their not built like previous tank mercs but there nowhere near as bad as some people have stated previously.
All the equipment you could want but make sure it comes with heated seats, leather, cruise, tiptronic etc as it can hit values.
Fallen like stones money wise in recent years and literally thousands about so don't be afraid to walk away.
I'd be inclined to say an Audi is a better built car but the merc's no fiat punto either, just not as good as the 70's/80's ones they built their huge rep on.
Watch for hpi/finance on them as well, lots of aspirational people bought them not realising how much it costs to keep them in tip top nick with servicing etc and may have thought just to walk away rather than keep ploughing money in.
Budget on £500-1000 for the injector job,it could be competent DIY material but I was a bit unsure,a turbos about £500 recon and easy to fit.
Excitement wise of course it wont be a cossie but you can park it somewhere, get 30plus mpg and still do 140 odd mph in pure comfort without worrying whether the things about to blow up.

I think the CLK 320CDi in AMG Sport trim looks fantastic and can't see it being too much of a headache to own... specially if you're warranty'd up.
Merc have turned themselves around again from what I've seen/heard, they had a BIG dip in quality when they decided to trade off past reputation for drastically over engineering cars, but have addressed this in recent years.
Cheers,
Grant

PassionFord Post Whore!!
I had a new 220 CDI coupe for about 6 months and liked it a lot. Wasn't fast or quick, but very comfortable for a long cruise - I drove from Dundee to Somerset without stopping and stepped out at the other end feeling fine.

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
Not hugely impressive to drive and IMO, don't feel as special as a Merc should, I'm not sure of you'd be interested, but for me a mk1 cls has a better feel.
Thing is, if it's a toy I'd buy some balls out big engine version, so it would feel a bit more special but they will no doubt have to pass through the 'another old Merc' barrier in a few years time before being being a classic, which the Cossie already is. I'd say maybe as a daily, but not a replacement for a toy.
Just my 2p
