Liking this comment, why stop at 140

. This is why all speed limits (residential areas excepted) don't make sense.
The limit on the motorway is always 70mph, but in 6 inches of snow 40
might be too much, whereas 140 on a sunny July morning might be fine.

They've already lowered a few limits round this way and are heavily policing the new limited areas

Same round my way. Few dual carriageways round the outskirts of town now with 50 speed limits.

Happening loads in Herts, I've worked on a number of new 20 zone proposals. Those things will spread across residential roads like a nasty rash.

I think it's bizarre that there's a dual carriageway near me, miles from the nearest house and it's a 50 limit, yet there's a stretch of road that passes a housing estate, with bus stops and plenty of pedestrians around etc and it's 60.

More time and effort needs to be spent on raising the standard of driving and less on actual speed, as most of the time it's shit driving that causes accidents.

Dual carriageways in blackpool are now 30mph, infact have been or a while.

Alot of residential areas are 20mph including around 3/4mile through a village main road. Guaranteed to have the mobile speed traps out raking in the revenue, I mean enforcing safety.

reducing speed limits will have no effect on stupid drivers. The correct speed "limit" is already in force - the national speed limit.

A speed limit is recognised in law as a maximum, not a target. it always has been. As is the fact you can get a dangerous driving conviction well within the speed limits if your speed is dangerous for the road or conditions.

You cant outlaw peoples stupidity or lack of common sense no matter what you try.

Education of young drivers is the key in my opinion, eg making country roads a compulsory element of driving tests and/or a 2 stage test covering motorways and advanced driving in part 2 to get a full license.

Country roads are perfectly safe if you drive according to the road and prevailing conditions. Anyone saying otherwise is talking shit.

if they keep on restricting motorists and pricing them off the road, then they will get to a point it has a negative effect on the economy and more importantly looses the government taxes.

its like the whole green arguement is a lie when you consider the actual co2 emissions of cars in the UK compared to our whole uk emissions. Even more of a joke when you compare it to the USA and china. Our efforts are like trying to use a bucket to bale out the sinking titanic The government will love us when we all drive "zero tax" rated economical cars. of course they wont love us because their tax income would plumet

What will they blame accidents on once they speed limit cars automatically to the road, wont be excessive speed!
Accidents will still happen and some will still be fatal unfortunately

As has already been said, the speed limits are fine, it is the idiots that either choose to ignore them and drive beyond the safe speed for the conditions and sadly, they wont change because someone sticks a lower speed limit on a road.

Increase the penalty for acting a twit, then those that do make their own choice and pay the price, not everyone else.

make less serious examples of careless or dangerous driving an FPN offence.

The police would then have the motivation to prosecute such drivers. Much of the problems caused on our road networks are caused by careless driving and dangerous driving, and too often it requires a lot of effort to prosecute so just doesnt happen as often as it should.

eg its hard to deal with MLM's, excessively slow drivers, tailgaters, 40mph everywhere drivers, etc etc unless the cop car is right behind them and has video running. And thats if the driver continues to break the law when a visible cop car is close and if the police dont have more "higher priority" things to prosecute.

However it would be easy for a cop to spot someone tailgating at a distance, via an overpass or following a way back etc and then issue an FPN.

Until you hit the idiot and selfish drivers hard, nothing will change.

When I read that I agreed with some of it, but as said it boils down to the fact that peeps need to drive according to the road and the conditions, been on some country roads that were 60mph limit, but on narrow, twisty, high hedged country roads, sometimes 30mph is too fast! But as said it is a limit not a target speed, but some drivers think otherwise.
