Default What cars where the boy racers driving when you were growing up?

being born in the end of the 80's i missed the 80's era of boy racers with the xr3s etc...,

i had to put up with 106's, corsa's, saxo's, punto's etc...

what about you guys?

Corsa's, Saxo's.

Whatever was widely reported as a cheap to insure car was a chav mobile he I was younger. So Metro's, Skoda's and Volvo's (Seriously, some numb-nuts chav around my way has chavved up a Volvo estate )

back in 1962 when i started driving the lads were still driving pre-war cars like 1930's Austin 7's. The quick cars were 1.5 Rileys or 105 Anglias fitted with larger Ford engines. My first modded car was a Austin Healey to which i fitted a Super charger my brother mentioned recently just how scary fast that car was . Then along came the Mini Cooper & it all changed we soon had them past 100bhp when fitted with a Shorrock Blower. They were the greatest ever days for boy racers, we were the first generation of lads to own our own cars & there was no speed Limits. We drove like maniac's with timed records to the nearest towns or the London run. My Tadley - Basingstoke record of 6min 57secs in a highly modded 'S' stood for altime as speed limits & road changes made it impossible to beat. Today that run is 20+ mins .

I'm with MadRod, just a very few years after. Anything from Minis to AC Cobras still in your teens.
I remember upgrading my mini from cross-ply to radials.

A vivid memory is that of 2 escort combi's (might have been 1 combi and 1 escort) giving it all or nothing past my mum, bro and myself on a main road side by side. It was not a duel carriage way but a 30mph built up. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up then fucked off with the noise. Having driven the same stretch a few year's later showing 95mph on the clocks of a 105 bhp Orion they must have been going well. I started to buy the ford mags after that. I did have a soft spot for the Nova's too if I'm honest.

1st inspirational moment was when I witnessed a mk1 astra gte racing a orion 16i ghia flat out around the bend near maccie's/argos in blackpool around 17years ago.

2nd moment was on my second driving test, I was overtaken by a saff and escos racing on the seafront.

When I was at the impressionable age (mid 80's) it was capri's, cortina's, mk1 and mk2 escorts, the mod of my day was the challenge of fitting a rover v8 engine into anything lol

then the 90's arrived and it was 5gt turbos, uno turbos, 21 turbos and of course the blue oval brigade 3i's rst's and cossies none of the boy racers had a cossie round my way though cos they were a lot of money to buy back then, one of the local villans had a stolen moonstone 3 door but that was as close as I got to one for a long time, one of the local business men had a black 3 door which he still owns to this day
