First memory of boy racers was me walking home from school and I always walked over the hump backed bridge when I heard this almighty roar and a white saph Cossy going like a bat out of hell jumps the said bridge and takes off about 2 foot off the ground and lands with sparks coming out from undeneath. What a sight that was standing at the crest of this bridge, from that day on I swore I would own one of those babies. It just looked so majestic in flight...

Good memories thinking about this, up my way there used to be a massive scene on the beachfront but that's pretty much died now because of so many accidents and deaths that it has been clamped down on really hard.
Peak of the action was around 98-2003 for me I'd say, people were driving the following;

106 Qucksilver
Saxo VTR/VTS(when they were new)
Carltons
E30's
Corsa/Nova
Cavvy GSI's
Charade GttI
Odd saph and escort cossie
As well as HUNDREDS of classic shape Imprezas
Strangest car anyone I know had was probably me in a fiat cinquecento as I'd not long passed my test or my mates old old old shit style Seat Ibiza, or a citroen Zx, utterly lame.

I was born in the early 70's so to start with there were:

mk1 ,mk2 RS escorts and mexico ,chevettes HSR, lotus sunbeams, lotus Cortina's & R5 gordini

later on came the ford xr2,xr3, golf gti's, ford cossies RS Turbo's, Vaux SRI & GSI's

Two rich blokes in our area has some interesting cars, one a 60's mustang (it was like the one in Bullitt) and one a 70's Lotus Europa Twin Cam.

I grew up with 6 mad uncles and a mad dad in the 80s so the anglias mk1 escorts granadas mk3 tinas were all the mad cars!!

Infact i was obsessed with mk 1 escorts from about the age of 8 and had my first one at 14!! That was bad for my liscence!!

My uncle had a mk 1 mexico that was the nuts !! 175 hp in 1980 he beat everyone and everything in that little thing!! i loved it..

I still have 3 mk1s and 2 mk 2s now all with alot more than 175 hp tho!!

I was legal in 97 to drive and since then have had over 30 mk1/2 escorts,10 capris 2.8/30s and then came the cossie days...lol

cheers danny

I was born in 92, so I also had to put up with the shit heap Saxo's that had been reading too many Max Power mags!
There used to be a red S2 around when I used to walk to primary school, strange how things like that stick in your mind!

back in 1996 when i first got into the scene was mk 1,2,3 and 4 escorts, sierras, metros, renault 5 turbos, opel manta gtes, mk1 and 2 astra gtes, ford orions and lots of escort vans and mk1 and 2 astra vans done up nice with massive sound systems! never saw a cossie un till early 2000s as no one could afford them! didnt even know they existed till then lol! oh and ford granadas, capri 2.8i and mk5 cortinas. also the main thing i noticed most of the lads were either mechanics/apprentice mechanics (like myself) or bodyshop/tyre fitters or in the trade one way or the other. took my cossie out down the local haunts last week for the first time in years and its all new stuff on finance or completely standard crap cause no ones got a clue how to work on there own cars lol! cheers, gary

First memory of boy racers for me was going along the road with my parents in their car, when a lime green calibre kitted mk2 cavalier shot past with a purple xr4i kissing its back bumper...

when i was about 7 me old man had bought a mini he used to use for pottering about in, me mum had a Red Cortinia, i saw pictures of it only recently, HOLY SHIT if it was in that condition it was in the photo only fuck knows how much it would of been, they also had 3 Jaguars Daimler's 4.2 dont recon they got many races in the Jags, too much power.

by the time i was about 10 they had a Limited edition mk3 Escort estate, we only found out it was limited edition when it got crushed !!

my brother drove it round when he passed his test, then when i was 18 i bought an XR3i cabriolet with the full mind to tune it up, i never liked the new cars i thought they looked bubbly and plastic and though they were shit overall, ive stuck with the Escort even now, ive owned 3 all together but have had each one a long time.

I never classed my self as a boyracer as i tryed to have something completely different and faster than the stupid fucking Saxos and corsas, LETS HAVE IT RIGHT, THE COSSIES AND THE ESCORTS STILL LOOK BETTER AND ARE MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN THE SHIT THEY PUMP OUT IN OUR DAYS.

Being in Essex and passing my test in 2001, it was Rs turbos, Cosworths, Xr3i's, Orions, Xr2i's and the usual haunt of Novas and Astras etc... Then afew years later it was all max-power style saxos and puntos etc.
Now its all newer stuff, Focus RSs and STs, fiesta Sts and ZSs with some VXRs and Meganes etc.
What happened to the good old days?

Some of the non-Ford cars around when I was younger that were favoured by the boy racers were the likes of the Morris Marina TC, Hillman Avenger Tiger and Vauxhall Magnum 2•3.
The Ford boys were driving MK1 Capri and Cortina GT & 1600 E.

Great days 😄

Brings back some good memory's of when i was younger.

We use to have big meets everynight late 90's there would be 30 - 40 cars easy it use to be a good laugh. use to get the car tarts as we called them that had been through just about every guy there

There was

R5's
Nova's
Escorts 3 / 4 RST's Yarmouth we called it the RST capital there where loads of them there
Cav's

Back then it was a lot more lenient and the police where not breathing down your neck and then they had a huge clampdown and even now when i pop through town on my way home you don't really see anyone anymore its a thing of the past i think.

A lot of the guys was into all the big spoilers and looked like they had driven through Halfords with there cars covered in glue and what ever stuck to it stuck to it sort of thing. Where myself use to concentrate more under the bonnet it was power that done it for me

the two main cars around here i bought them both in the finish, a white glen odell built stage 3 saph then a moonstone 3 door 500 hp a1 rallyesport built.
they were the fastest cars i knew of at that time around here.

Never forget when I lived in Devon, there was a lad with a mk1 RS2000 and another with a Fiat 131 mirafiori sport, always remember seeing them race each other round the town, looked and sounded awesome lol, the main boy racer scene revolved around bikes though tbh which don't really do a lot for me.

Mk2 Mexico's, Mk2 RS2000's and flat front fibresports x-pack kitted mk2's. Then the N/a XR3's came along, Mk1 xr2's etc etc. Mk 2's soon ended up at banger money as no-one wanted them for love nor money.

Born '76 so all UNO turbos,golf gti's,rs turbos,Astra gte's,nova sr's,metro/maestro mg's etc.
Ultimate chavmobiles were capri's,cortina, manta's and shining above all as the ultimate chavmobile the escort xr3/i.
Orion ghias were a far classier motor than a 3i,I remember blowing them away in a 1.3 fiat UNO!!!
The rs turbo was a pricey motor when I was starting out and couldn't live with a 16v gte, although they couldn't go round a bend.
Most popular car thief motors were the cavvy gsi's,or "the guvnor" as some 14 yr old skinny chav bird told me when I was in my mates one aged 20.
Suzuki swift gti and corolla gti's spring to mind as well, the mr2's were way out of most peoples league yet ironically out of all the above are now probably worth the least!!!

That's why I always chuckle when people come on here calling subaru's "chavmobiles",they were Ł10-15 grand cars when I was about 21-22 whereas the poor old xr3 was scrap money, they were being welded up back in the mid 80's/90's when they were 3 years old which is a huge part of the reason why a good one now fetches so much money!!!

Nice rare q-cars were the lancia delta turbos, croma turbo,r21 turbo, mega rare r25 turbo,405 mi-16's the list goes on.

Street racing was where it was at,I remember in my saph cos aged 22 hitting 110mph down oxford street in Swansea at about 2am racing a cavvy gsi.
If you know the area it's a one way street with cars parked both sides about 2 miles long that looking back had someone walked out or we'd lost it there would have been a good 15 cars taken out.
Of course it shocks some of our younger readers but if your over 32/33 and were into cars then you street raced, simple as,if you got away from a copper that was that,no comebacks, none of this section 59 bollocks etc.
One of the best I ever had was in the UNO turbo against a 16v golf gti along the mumbles road towards mumbles,I'm pretty sure we hit 115/120 in the 30 section.if I wasn't sold on turbo power beforehand I was then,it destroyed the golf and most of the other cars I used to dabble with back then although admittedly most were of a similar genre.
Still had my head under the bonnet pretty much everyday of ownership though!!!!

When I first passed my test it was pretty much your usual Saxo/106, Fiesta, Mg ZR lot. Now it's mostly Vauxhalls round here, turbo coupes, Astra and Corsa VXRs etc. They all seem to think their driving the fastest cars ever produced too so it's amusing to see them go backwards in my rear view mirror

As mentioned above the "car slags".
Not a night went by without getting some sort of tarts in the back, generally from the roughest parts of town looking for a lift home etc or if you went up the valleys they'd love to go for a spin to the "bright lights" of the city and usually obliged with at least a snog, quite often a bit more!!!
Don't know if they still exist now but my boys 17 in October so I'm sure I'm gonna find out.
