e39 BMWs and rust
I know its a ford forum, but plenty of 5 series owners on here.
What are they like for rust, body wise, and underneath? Any hidden known areas to double check etc
Cheers

The E39 seems to be rustier then my old fords
Would check following parts:
Not sure about the "hidden" areas
Would check following parts:
- tailgate (frame - rear window)
- doors
- bonnet
- wheel arch
- rear axle (or the strut)
Not sure about the "hidden" areas
- B/C-pillar (sometimes under the fairing, not sure what model)
I've had 4 in the last 5 years and apart from one small spot on the boot lid next to the number plate recess on the 96 540 none have had any rust issues.
Even the 98 520 I bought for £200 is rust free and all my cars have lived on or very near the coast for quite a few years.

Inside the fuel cap is a little water trap they can go,
Underside of the tailgate (Where the no plate lights are)
Around the arches and sill edges usually from untreated stone chips,
