Default Braking Problems!

Hello!

I don't know if anyone can help me, but my brakes seem to have stopped working unless pressed right to the floor and even then they are very slow!

My brake fluid was low but I've now topped this up, however it's not helped! I also noticed after I'd filled it up there was a pool of fluid in the footwell on the drivers side!

Help please!

Thank you!

How much is that to replace?

It was making a crunching noise before this happened, so I think the brake pads need replacing too!

Sounds like clutch has leaked and put air in system! The the brake master cylinder is on opposite side off car!

They will share the same system I suspect, like other models, hence a problem with one, will affect the other.

OP, I suspect the crunching sound you are referring to, is actually whilst changing gear?

Even if it is the clutch it's almost certainly the M/C for that for it to be leaking into the foot well!

The part isn't too expensive but it is a fairly labor intensive task!

Is the pool of fluid definately brake fluid and not just water from a leaky door seal?
How low did the fluid get? Low enough to let air in the system?
Have you got an brake fluid/clutch leaks anywhere?
What condition are the discs, pads, shoes and drums in? The grinding could be coming from them.

To be honest, as you have already admitted you are "totally crap with cars" you MUST take it to a good garage or at the very least a good home mechanic as the brakes are the most important part of your car and it sounds like a death trap at the moment!

yes it can be quote labour intensive but another issue could now be paint and brake fluid acts like paint stripper! careful wash out your carpet out of the car, using lots of detergent to remove the fluid then dab out the fluid in the foot well, using absorbent cloth. Leave to dry and see has damage it has done to the paint.

Good luck.
