Angry vr6 not starting then runs and cuts out

weird one, fitted my brand new catalytic convertor on the golf 1992 VR6 for MOT the other day and was running fine. i run a de-cat and putting new cat on for emmissions.

got home today after a 13 mile drive home from work and went to go out 5 minutes later and the car wouldnt start and smelt of fuel. left it 15 minutes started it and it ran fine then 3 to 4 minutes later it cut out again and wouldnt start, got it going again, drove 1 mile and cut out. ive had a look at fuel lines from tank and engine and no splits etc, checked spark plugs, nice brown colour and not wet...

any ideas? ive replaced all sensors like temp etc... a year ago. or maybe the new catalytic isnt letting the engine breath but ive done about 20 miles perfect on it??

Ignition coils are a common failure on VW's. They have the ignition module (the bit that fails) built in to the bottom of them and will give you your symptoms.

If you have a dizzy, you will have a coil. It's on the bulkhead on the gearbox side held on with 2 10mm nuts and bolts.

I'll grab a pic of mine.

Lambda sensors? Messed with the cat, the lambda sensors have probably been disturbed, giving false readings making it overfuel and flood the cylinders???

Not 100% sure if it's the same setup, but on mk3 gti's there is a relay inder the driver side dash that are prone to bad connections and will give these symptoms

It is the 2nd row of relays and the 2nd or 3rd in from the left, try wiggling it or swapping with another
