Default Back street garage, you could'nt make this up!

my mate serviced another mates seat ibiza tdi today,

he has had it 5 years since 3 yrs old its a 53 plate and just about to tick over 150k miles

since he has had it he has had it serviced at what he thought was a good garage but my mate has just gone self employed and decided to give him the job from now on as he is a good mechanic

my mate doesnt really look at his car maintenance wise and just goes on what the mechanic says

when he bought the car he got it serviced by this garage and the bloke said the sump plug thread was knackered on the sump itself so has replaced it with a spark plug! saying it didnt leak so will be ok. my mate wasnt pleased about it but new sump is about £400 so left it be ,

so today we took the sump gaurd off to reveal the "spark plug" that was bodged it with a load of silicone! took it out and removed the silicone and the plug didnt even fit it just slopped about in the hole so it was only held in by the silicone! WTF there is bodging then there is BODGING!

funny thing is, is that the thread in the sump is ok and we found a plug for it that fitted and tightened up ok .

we came to the conclusion the garage lost his sump plug in the oil pan and made the story up , they gave what my mate thought was his sump plug but its completly the wrong bolt for it lol

the sumps on these and others golfs, audis skodas etc, do tend to strip the threads when removing the plug, its a common thing on them but as you say replacing with an ill fitting sparkplug is a bodge
tho a new sump isnt anywhere near £400 i bought one for a mate off ebay after he cracked his on a speedbump for £40 brand new

Shame, if dodgy lazy small garages keep messing up independent places trustworthyness will be lost. and with the tech that keeps advancing the days of the small garages will be lost.

Haha brilliant.
I had the opposite problem.
My next door neighbour had a cavalier td about 10yrs ago, perfectly good car that started to get slow and slow to start.
I told him a mate of mine had just gone self employed and used to work for vauxhall and had a couple of his own and was well into them, so my neighbour used him.
What a mistake!
He took the car, had it a couple of weeks then gave it back with a big bill for the head gasket.
I asked my neighbour how it was, his reply, "not as good as i expected"
I had a look, no new glow plugs, cable tied on boost hoses, plugs left unplugged, very slow...
I got another mate who runs a big indy garage to look, turns out the 1st bloke had got all the shims in the tappets wrong.
Mechanic number 2 redid all the shims, plugged everything back in, fitted new glow plugs and jubilee clips on the boost hoses and it was like a new car!
Lesson learnt lol.

Normally the oil pans have a gauze over them though? So it would have kept the bolt. Total bodge up whatever though!

That Is a Shocking bodge ive seen this only to often on these sumps we i get a car in like that the customer is imformed of the two options a replacement sump which can be expencive aspecially if it has the sensor bolted to the bottom of it or it gets helicoiled which is the cheapest option but the key is to change the sump plug at every service they only cost a few quid and donot over tighten them
