Default ABS brakes

ok basically for the last month my abs light on my escort gti has been coming on and off when it please's, but it has been going off and staying off so i was hoping it was just dirt on the sensors or somthing but then this morning when i went out i was driving along and came to a junction, so i applied the brakes (not hard) and it made this terrible sound, abit like when u cruntch your gears but no as loud, and then the abs light came on and stayed on for the rest of the journey BUT the brakes seemed to work fine??

parked up, then drove back home with no light on, all fine??

thought it was dirty sensors or somthing but hearing that noise makes me think it might be somthing more?

Ive got exactly the same problem on my 3dr, sometimes its on, sometimes its off. But mostly from cold for some reason. If i turn the ignition off then back on, it might stay off, but it also might come back on. i was thinking the same about the sensors and whether it was the weather or not. Any ideas anyone?

sensor down and causing the peddle to pump hard then soft??

mine was weird at anything below 10mph, the brake peddle was rock hard and would stop the car instally, quite scary when cars behind were close.

cleaned sensors all fixed

I thought the later Escorts had Low Pad sensors that lit the light up?

Either way it's worth checking your fluid levels, pads and disks. Even taking off the wheels and checking the pistons aren't sticking and bleed the system through properly? make sure there's no leaks along the way

At least this way you'll know that you're safe

The crunch might have been a bit of grit caught between pads and disks?

On that model of Escort, the ABS light is also the seat belt restraint mechanism indicator light.

Any flashes on second position?

If the brakes ARE fine, and only if they are, then check the two connectors under the seats, as that could well be part of the problem
