Default Peugeot 306 S16 Anyone got/had one? Thoughts?

Decent sized hatch, 2 litre, looks smartish.

Thinking about one as a daily driver, what they like to own?

Lee,
S16 is pretty quick - 140bhp? or so, 306 can't weigh too much.. I nearly bought one locally last year, drove OK but not as quick as I was expecting.. it had been sitting around though, so maybe needed a little sorting. (and i'd got used to driving the cossie regularly for 2 months.. )

End of the day though it is French, so don't be surprised to see bits falling off behind you.

One word of warning - HEATER MATRIX! 306 has a well known problem with spitting out the heater matrix - check very carefully for any smells of coolant with the heater on, or damp in the carpet behind the centre console... it is a tw@t to change, virtually the first thing that gets fitted whn the car is built! Peugeot won't warranty a new matrix unless it's filled with the official PGC coolant/corrosion inhibitor, and it's not unheard of for even a new one to fail after a fairly short while.

The car I looked at had the damp carpet, which was what ultimately put me off, even though it was cheap

The 306's are nice cars

The s16 is 155bhp vs the gti6 which is 167bhp

As above leather interior, plenty of electrics to keep you happy, brillient handling for a standard car.

155! wow, didn't appreciate it was that much... the one I drove didn't go like 155bhp should.. maybe it was a bad one.. ? was a replacement engine done 10K miles too..

Yea, I noticed the clutch on the test drive!

Going to whack an exhaust, induction kit and think about a set of cams I think.

The power started to tail off around 6.5k although it did go well for what it is

Had a yoof in a S16 at Combe 2 years ago(RS day) asking if my saff was running on 3 after he was beasting my mate thru the bends(my mate was driving my car, with some respect thankfully),my bud says"not my fucking car you tit".
Next sesh out I REALLY took the piss out of him, clever twat. Didn't say anything else to us all day. Did ask him if his Pug was running Ok tho.

Sorry, waffling. Bound to be good handling but there will be better built cereal boxes available. Mate has a 2.0 XSi,good fun and had no bother in 2years.

And a damn site more unreliable too

I need power steering and toys I'm afraid

The pug is a great little thing to hoon around actually.

Brakes are a touch over-servo'ed but thats my only complaint so far.

Roll on the 23rd April

When Ford were doing the development work on the handling of the Puma & Focus, they wanted to be able to compare it to the best handling car at the time....you guessed it, we had to buy a S16 to chase the protoype Puma around the lanes of Essex!!!!
They picked the S16, as it was in their opinion the
''best handling hatch of the day''- Richard Parry-Jones
We had a large snap on tool kit in the pug and it had no bother keeping up with the ex rally driver in the Puma

I had a Pug 205 1.9 years ago when my mate had a S1 RST,we went out for a play one night and i HAMMERED him, straights easy, but bends were no contest.
Would imagine a 306 has a similar BHP/KG ratio.
How many roads/tracks do you know of with no bends/roundabouts?

Lee,

Try to get a test drive of a 306 Rallye (slightly stripped out/light-weight version of the GTI 6) - fantastic cars IMO

Yes heater matrixs are a C!!T Dash out job endeed

M8 bro nearly had a heart atack when he was coming down the M25

He looked in the mirror to see white spray stuff then noticed the temp gauge started to get higher so pulls in at south minns to find the pipes that go into the back of the matrixs had cracked and and was leakig water on the exsusted

But it was an easy repair after it was recovered on a low loader to mine
But Parts can be costy but then theres always german and swedish
Hope you have fun on the track if i get to some of them i'll keep an eye out for you
