Default Welding a front diff....

Going to put an engine + 'box from a front wheel drive to run as mid engined rear wheel drive, should really buy an LSD 'box but I'm tight, so can I just weld a front diff on the same principal as welding a rear one? Going to be an autograss type car so don't need any road manners, just a locked diff.

Yeah you can. Mate done this to run a mid mount fwd engine in a 4x4. Welded the diff to effectively make it a transfer box

paul swift in the fwd cars that they drive on 2 wheels have all their diffs welded lol.

ive always wondered what it would be like in a normal fwd car to drive hard with a welder...

probably end up in a hedge due to understeer lol

why not lol. thye can be very handy!

when we had all that rain and floods a few years back i remember stav in his old 200sx with a welder, couldnt get home due to flooding etc so in the end as the air filter and exhaust were on the same side of the car he drove it along a grass bank for some distance at a 45 degree angle. his feet were under water and the welder allowed him to drive and not just spin the wheel.

so there we go, for drifting/driving on 2 wheels/getting through floods - welded diffs FTW!

I know people who have tried welded front diffs for FWD cars in drag racing as a pikey alternative to a LSD.

HORRID on the road, not like a rear one which is just slightly bad manners, far worse, epsecially for stuff like parellel parking.

For your use though, no problem at all as its just going to be a rear diff in your car anyway.

Yeah that's exactly it, it will be used as a rear diff just one that's in a FWD gear box. Haven't ever really investigated FWD 'boxes so wasn't sure if it would be as straight forward but seems it is.

Only downside is if bits of weld come off it can trash your gearbox of course.

the best way to weld the diff, as no doubt it will be an open diff is to cut some 5mm thick steel plate that will fit in the holes either side, then weld those in place as well as welding up the planet gears.

will be much stronger that way, instead of just welding the planet gears up.

Yeah the welding should be ok, I'm a fabricator lol. Was actually thinking of cutting teeth into the plates so they lock into the gears, plus it would give a better weld seat too rather than filling big gaps with weld lol.
