20K+ Super Poster.
having owned a XR4x4 and XR4i i'd say for a track car, try the XR2
cant beat it for FUN FACTOR
if you wanna mod the engine, use bolt on bits. ie twin 40s or something... that way if the engine blows, you can swap the bolt ons over
if you spend £££ doing pistons, rods, head etc. etc. n engine blows you lose all your money

Nova GTE. Cheap as hell.
loads of bits available, converting to 2.0 16v is dead easy.
Got one sat on the drive for sale @£350 needs engine work (see cars for sale section)

Non Ford again but go for a Pug 205 GTI. Will piss on any FWD Ford handling wise(that hasn't had serious mods),and pretty quick as std. Simple enough too.

I agree with plynchy
I was looking for a car to use on track this year and was looking at 1.9 205GTi but I wanted something comfortable to use every day too so I spent a bit more and got a 306 S16
Sadly the best cheap track cars don't have a Ford badge on them imo

As loads of people have said Mk2 XR2.
Pug 205's are the business and can be obtained for half a Mars bar and a can of Coke.
Mk3 XR2i's are cheap easy and fun.
