Cosworth heater motor,aircon model..
Ive got a 1992 Sapphire Cosworth 4x4 with aircon, and the heater motor has died today
Its been getting sticky/dodgy past couple years, but after giving the motor a tap through the inspection cover from engine/bulkhead side it usually starts again !
Now am i right in thinking that the models with aircon means that its a dash out job to get at the heater motor, ive tried doing a search on here for the info to no avail.Doh..
The motor has got 12v going to it and a good earth.
I can turn the motors shaft so its not seized up either.
Sods law this is as ive just mot'ed and taxed it for the summer, and now it throws a wobbly
Any help guy's would be appreciated

PassionFord Post Whore!!
The aircon motor is in a bigger box but it all comes out from the engine bay.
Not 100% certain, but I think the motor inside the box is the same as the more common non-aircon models.

Really didnt want to pull the dash out
Just been reading up on how it comes out of a non aircon model, and it looks straight forward enough.

what you want to do is find a granada with air con and swap the motor over
but be aware that some granda's have 2 extra wires to the motor box so just remove the whole box and snip the wires out with it
it's only 2 bolts either side and a bit of grief with the pipework on the passenger side

finding a sierra with air con is going to be much harder than finding a granada with air con, Scorpio models had them as standard (as in granada Scorpios, not the frog eyed things) and the 92 spec facelift models had a different heater box assembly, but this was more to do with the temp and recyle pipes being inside the box rather than outside

dojj, yes it does look like a sealed unit.
Just wish i could find some pictures of the heater unit out the vehicle on the internet,it would explain so much.
This item on fleabay looks like mine :http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2808260243...ht_2473wt_1185
CheersLuke, ive contacted them so hopefully will know more later on..

Happily have a go at doing the brushes, but i want to try and find out if its a straight forward job like a non aircon heater looks,or if its going to be a pig of a job as it looks like a sealed unit from the limited view ive got from under the bonnet.
Would say a days work cover getting it out and stripped apart ?
I think its either brush's or maybe filled up with fluff e.t.c. as the car only gets used 6 months of the year !
From the item in the ebay link, does that whole heater unit come out from the engine bay side ?
Then it can be split apart im guessing.
Its so annoying that i can see the motor through the resister/inspection hatch, but cant get it out

Yes mate, the whole thing comes out as a while unit
But you have to degas the system first as you have to split the pipe work
There is a little panel with 2 screws to undo around the pipes and then you undo the torx boot in the middle
You will neednew orings as well if you are unlucky and you will obviously need a regas so plenty of work

Dojj, nick or anyone in the know. Can you tell me how to disconnect the 2 aircon pipes that go into the union bellow please ?
Will depressurize the refrigerant first though
Also is there anything behind the dash that needs undoing before trying to pull the unit out from engine bay ?

you have to remove that cover, that rusty bolt we can see in the bottom pic and the little stub you can just about see at the top in line with the blue thing
you can then see the torx bolt inbetween the pipes that hold them in place
nothing else needs to be undone but you may need to unclip some wiring plugs

Think i know what i need to have a go now
Will have a go next week at taking it out,and getting at the motor brushes.
The cheapest quote for a second hand full unit is Ł50 delivered, hence i will go the brushes route first
Thanks for your help

Got the heater unit out this afternoon, not hard but labour intensive !
There was one hidden 13mm nut under a multi plug box that took some finding
Still ive seperated the heater box and got the motor out,and the good news is that the brushes have plenty of life in them
The bad news is after cleaning them and the surounding area, there is still an intermittent problem with the motor
With power direct to the motor sometimes its fine, then it just stops again. No overheating, arcing or other hints.Doh..
Guess tomorrow i will be stripping the motor further
