Yes you can run an engine in a rolling road (i assume you mean that NOT a dyno?)

racers do it all the time.

Engine dynos have a run-in program, so no probs. But as you say, the fuel cost / dyno time would be horrendous .

I cant think of a set of rollers who would say no to running an engine in, its easy money from their point of view.

As mike says, you actually do it on a program which varies the speed up and down etc, it can actually be more effective than an equal amount of time on the road.

Id want to still see at least 3 hours running though probably for a road engine, then start mapping it at part throttle and lower rpm so that it gets some extra time before its actually fully under load.

Ive neve done it myself, so cant comment on the costs, but 400 quid on a 4wd rolling road sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Nice to be able to monitor everything as its running in, plus you can still be doing some basic mapping at the same time to ensure its running in just right and not bore washing which is a common mistake people make with "safe" running in maps.

Is it not better for an engine to be run in on the road ( real world driving, not motorway ) to ensure proper bedding in of the rings etc?
I know Rudey's circumstances dont give him much choice, was just wondering.

Cheers.

No cause on a road you cant control the loads its under as well as you can on the rollers.
You can wind it up and down the revs at will, and vary the load against it etc fully on a set of rollers.

Rudey, not sure where you are based fella, but Northampton Motorsport offer this service, they're running my Mark1 in on their rollers in a few weeks

Their cost is based on an hourly rate as far as i know and he's looking at 3hours for the Mk1.

I think the running in depends on what work it's had done to be honest. He recommended that period for mine. Now you got me thinking.....

Depends on the engine, and specifically the piston to bore clearances etc, and how its going to be used.

For a race engine with the piston slopping around the bore like a 16 year old lad up a prostitute, 50 miles is plenty, for a road going engine with tight tolerances i always go for 500 miles very fussy, then 500 miles steady use, then 1000 miles of not thrashing it.

Running an engine in is probably the most controversial topic ever and there appears to be no definitive answer available.

I personally supply my engines with a written running in and oil change program of bring to me for fuel and timing setting then a 1000mile step by step running in procedure after which they are to be returned to me for the boost and fuelling setting up.

does harvey do it?
Rudester, he obviously uses the engine dyno run-in programme before any mapping takes place on a freshly built engine so it's possible. I know the engine dyno is quite busy, and I'm not sure if Harvey has the looms etc. to put a CVH on the dyno, but it's worth a call. The only downside may be cost, but you could also get the engine mapped by Ahmed at the same time to make full use of the dyno time/cost?
