Opinions/Experiences with regard to Keele University
As much as it's hyped up to be a very prolific and highly succesful law and criminal sciences university.....has anyone actually been, whether that be a visit or actually having taken their degree there?.....pm me or reply here if you have any experience of it. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Its a long way to go for an open day to come back shaking my head....lol
Many thanks

I am applying to Oxford for definate, as the course is impeccable.....but Keele has a more suited Law with Criminal science course....that not many uni's do, possibly Keele, Bristol, UCL, Cardiff, etc....dependant on course reviews and open days etc.

Keele Uni is about 5 minutes from my parents house, and my mum got a double 1st degree there! I've never asked her what the nightlife was like though I think they are building a new Student Union at the moment?
Seriously though, it seems a nice enough place and it is in a good area, and the local town is Newcastle-under-Lyme where i've lived my whole life, very nice place I can't really answer much about the uni itself but if you want to know anything about the area then ask away.

A mate goes there and hates it....so much so that he drives the 3 1/2 hours to come home every weekend because he can't stand to be there!
I can't be arsed with uni anymore, hence why I'm accepting offers from unis which aren't as good, because they're near my house

I have some friends that go there, one does Criminology and Psychology. I have been there and I have also been to the union. It's 30mins from me. It's just like any other uni in my opinion, doesn't particular shine out or look below par. Not compared to Bangor uni anyway.

The Medics are offered more of the sponsorship, (as in a higher number of sponsorships). I'm unsure if the RAF need more Medics than Law grads. or what. Id have thought medical grads. wouldn't consider RAF really....most want to specialise these days, much more money in it.
Only a commitment to three years service, instead of the 6. Then you can leave and start up yourself, or just switch....if you aren't enjoying it. Worth it to have a laugh at myself in an RAF officers uniform
In short, Im looking at a Law degree with applied Criminology modules

Oxford is obviously a well respected university, however there are things you need to consider first is could you afford it? Its ok saying you can get your student loan but as rich will tell you, the books can be very expensive should you need to buy them. I bought a book for £47+ second hand. I actually couldnt get a new copy. And this is the 14th book I have bought this year for the course.
This link http://www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/courses/law.shtml tells you a bit about there course and entry requirements. I would also tell you that its not like an Ally McBeal show and requires a lot of written work and research. After you finish your law degree, if you want to practice law there is a further course you must take. People see he Barristers making big ££££` but there are over 2000 barristers out of work in belfast, and you obviously have a further exam to take to become one.
Temptrs has actually made a very valid point, this will go against you in your application. I wouldnt mention it at all to be honest.
I am currently trying to finish my law degree on a part time basis. I could go back full time but being 25 and watching students arse about does not appeal to me, I wouldnt piss on some of them if they where on fire.
If you want any help or advice on the course let me know and I can send you an old sample of work.

I didn't do law at Uni - I did History, but did History of Law subjects in my degree.
However, I wanted to do my CPE after, but decided I couldn't hack it - may still do it anyway..........
My old housemate did 3 years Law degree, then his LPC, and he's now doing his training contract at Nbarro......... but he's been 8 years studying, and he makes less than most people I know.
My best mate's girlfriend is training to be a barrister. That'll be 8 a.m. start in London, and home by 10 p.m. Horrible lifestyle.........

Hadn't considered it prior to then really, one of those 'oh nice uni,...now where shall I apply'....just a comparison atm....as with all the others.
In addition to Law I am also considering forensic science as I think it's absolutely fascinating....but I haven't really had chance to research that in detail as yet what with exams etc coming up in a few months...
I have the summer to really clarify in my mind the direction that I wish to take
I'm ust starting to get a few ideas together now which will hopefully lift a weight off me somewhat when everyone else is rushing to sort things out post september...
Personally no I won't mention anything that isn't asked ....like I won't mention anything else such as my lack of enthusiasm for local landmarks that would make me seem a little less of a shining example....but if somebody asks, yes of course....no drama to me...in essence a person is a whole package....
If I do not get my 4 A'S I won't apply... out of shame for not being as academically credible as I'd need to be....not for any other reason...
If somewhere actively doesn't like the candidate, then the candidate would not enjoy the uni In my opinion....so I'd rather start off on an honest footing...to avoid problems later on. I've never had any derogatory experience before (in real life now) with regard to my sites....and pretty much everyone I've known has seen them, ....a shock to them mainly because I'm not the stereotypical type to do it maybe, but never a point of conflict....
I wouldn't want to be accepted wholely on the basis that I've worked hard for 6 months but have no life experience or any other form of non book reading aspects to contribute to such an establishment.
Money shouldn't be an issue ...well....an unmanagable issue anyway. (I haven't really got any need to go to a London University, UCL etc).
I have college savings accounts etc that are released on my 18th birthday, which will obviously be kept until Autumn '06...for when I go to Uni.
I will definately get a student loan, for the pure reason that if I don't use it....it'll make it's own interest and cause no burden to me in later life....0% interest on money you haven't spent, lol.
It's not just a sudden thought of 'I'll go to uni now....' there's never been a time in my life where I've had any other consideration for my future (leaving at 16, getting a job, etc wouldn't suit me..I have no gripes with learning...so not reason to stop).
To me a degree is one of the most important things that I am able to do for myself...I wouldn't feel complete without one, I think I need the challenge to be honest.
Im going to take the LNAT .... and not make any concrete decisions until I have that....November I think that'll be, so still a while off.
</end essay>
Katie, on Phil's account.

A law course at a top university could cost you up to £20000 course only (accomodation etc.. on top) and then you have your legal practice course which costs about £1500 a year after you graduate. It can be from 2 to 4 years.
I wouldnt rush into anything as you have said, but for a top university you have to apply early or express interest.
Quote "Personally no I won't mention anything that isn't asked ....like I won't mention anything else such as my lack of enthusiasm for local landmarks that would make me seem a little less of a shining example....but if somebody asks, yes of course....no drama to me...in essence a person is a whole package.... They wont bother about your enthusiasm for landmarks, but what they will maybe make you do is a short written exercise where they will ask you a question and depending on your answer they will let you in (depending on a levels etc..)
They asked me "do you think todays claim culture has an adverse effect on the morality of society" You had to show that you could debate and show your findings and use examples to prove your point" In the Interview after they asked what we thought the answer was, do you know what it is?

The morality issue, I hope they ask me a similar question, I have such strong opinions on the claim culture.....the american influence eg
'Sue mcdonalds because im now fat' campaigns....and the claims direct style ..
'I fell over at work because I didn't look at the puddle on the floor in front of me' cases....it's changing soceity a lot...people seem to want to be compensated for every eventuality these days...every accident now has a price....
Im not sure if you had to do the LNAT on entrance? had it been introduced etc?...Seems a very good way of determining the ability of a candidate to me...law directed aptitude test....
Thank you for your input anyway hun ....
Very helpful to speak to people that have taken it recently rather than others who have been practising since the dawn of time....when hardly any of the system resembles the current one...
