Default Accidentally put petrol in our diesel van! How do I time up the pump pulley?

About £15 worth then put another £20 of diesel, was running ok then just stopped, undone one of the injector lines and there seems to be no fuel coming out when cranking.
Have we killed the pump?

It's a 1.8 TD Escort Van on a T reg, drove it about 16 miles until it stopped!

Thanks.

yep should have brimmed it as you've done a near 50/50 mix and thats WAY too much petrol!

Note, most manufacturers recomend adding upto 10% petrol in winter hence why you should have brimmed it!

is it a modern tdci?

I think I would be draining it, especially if it's a modern CR derv.

thats the best thing to do, unless you've driven it then you're in trouble.

As above we've done about 16 miles (until it stopped), it's a T reg 1.8 TD Escort van, I dont think draining it will help as the fuel pump appears to be not pumping.
Just checked the belt and thats fine and is turning the pump but no fuel to the injectors.
Could the petrol have killed the seals maybe?

Sounds like you've killed the pump because diesel lubricates the pump and that mix would have probably not been enough to lubricate it. On these is the fuel filter in the pump?

Check the filter first, you may have just flushed all the crap out the tank into the filter? petrol tends to flush all the sludge that grows in diesel tanks ?

Gotta try the filter before the tank, as above petrol really cleans everything so any dirt/sludge is the diesel will be loosened and hopefully the filter will have caught it..
Im no expert but i thought the older pumps wouldve survived the lack of lube for afew mins compared to the modern high pressure pumps.
Worst case scenario its a new diesel pump!

Fingers crossed for you m8...

An old t plate td will be fine you'll need to drain the tank and put straight diesel in it though I've never had an escort td yet that's broke cos of this and I've one loads. Place I used to work had about 15/20 of them and smilley transits and the boys used to do it once a week.

Hmm.. Well there was no fuel coming out of the injectors lines when cranking so I'm guessing the pump is fucked, I took the filter off and thats clean as a whistle and when you manually prime plenty of fuel comes out so thats not blocked.

I've siphoned as much as I can out the tank and used the manual priming pump on the filter housing to clear the lines as much as is possible.

How much fuel should squirt from the injectors lines when cranking, should it be a decent flow or just a trickle?

Also just occurred to me that there is probably some sort of timing procedure for when refitting the pump?

The cam belt has not come off so i just need to know what position the pump pulley has to be in when the engine is at TDC I guess?

Cheers!

Quick question whilst it's being discussed - when i add diesel i put £40 which get's roughly 25 litres, what ratio of petrol would you add to that - i have never done it and was wondering if it would be a good thing to give it a clean or would it just cause issues?

Thanks.

I did the ame thing with my 1600cc diesel combi mk4. The only thing was I never realized what I had done, the thing is so good on fuel, I was miles away from garage by the time she started to play up. I managed to nudge her home about twenty miles, I then realized while talking to mate what I had done. But thank good all I had to do was undo pipe coming out of tank and drain her. I thought I had got away with it. But she dose not start as easy as she used to now. Diesel combi pete.
