Cheap track day toys
hello chaps.
MY escort won't be done for a long long while so I'm looking at possible getting a cheap track day toy i can blast around the track. something with bait of grunt would be nice. even if its something i have to drop a exhaust and some coilovers and other parts on .....
will consider anything other than 172 or 182
what are you thoughts ? civic maybe ? or a 106gti .....

Ive been in SO many different trackday cars over the years and the clio 172 really does seem to be a particuarly good package, especially when you factor in how usable they are as a spare daily driver too.
My mrs uses ours for everything from commuting a couple of miles to work, to visting family a 400 mile round trip away to doing trackdays in, they just do everything pretty well and for not a lot of money.

Lee just beat me to it. 1.7 Puma's a great little tool for small tracks, no fun for Hangar straight tho but comparable power to a standard RST for reference and far better handling. Still go for Clio if I had about 2k to spend though. Don't forget to factor brake upgrades though so anything between Ł150 and Ł300 depending on what you want.also BMW 3 series or MX5

New Helix uprated organic clutch
Forged Pistons/ Steel Rods
ARP head bolts
Bare block has gone off to machine shop but is waiting for the pistons before it can be finished.
Phase 1 head has gone to Neil Roper for inspection of valve guides etc and to do any work required.
Mike is going to remake the existing looms rather than order new as he thinks he can salvage it into something less likely to catch fire than it is currently without needing to completely replace.
Cam cover has gone off for sand blasting and powder coating, other engine parts have been vapour blasted to clean them up.
Cams STILL "coming soon"
(will order different if no news when Mike goes to collect the pistons and rods which are meant to be in tomorrow)
Valves the only uprated ones readily available (ie not a 3-6 months wait like from G&s) are supertech, im still trying to find out if they are one or two piece though, ktec either dont know or wont say, and supertech im still waiting on details of.
If they are two piece, there is no point going for them instead of the renault ones as the temps involved wont melt the renault ones so the only risk is head depature from stem, and that will be a risk on any 2 piece anyway so pointless paying extra if the others are 2 piece too.
Im of the opinion the standard ones should be fine if new though given the lack of extreme nature of the build (ie its going to be mapped a touch rich to keep it safe and its not going to be on a mega high rev limiter either, probably 7600rpm), will talk to you about that more once I have more info though.
Other than the cams and valves it all seems to be going pretty much according to plan so far for it to start going back together next week, then the week after we'll run it and then remap it, and it should hopefully be back to you comfortably before the bedford RS day.
