Clio all day long........... too many to choose from Ł1500 will see you in a good one with tax and test.

Only other option out of the box is a 306 GTI 6 in my opinion - when I tracked my 172 a 306 was the only car that beat me significantly enough to make me think it was worth while but they're rare and long in the tooth now.

a 306 rallye will be better than the first 3 on chips list so please ignore his comment lol i think he's got his clio blinkers on!

if you can't find a rallye try a gti6 perfect cheap track toy, then vts or if you can up your budget a dc2 teg. a clio should be lower down the search list, ffs a 205 gti is better than a clio lol

Problem with buying a 172 is that you'll see how well they drive be addicted to the track and sell your rst

E36 325 would be my bargain bin choice cheap as chips to buy these days and a hoot to drive on track too, stripped out pretty quick machine as well
also it would be different enough to warrant keeping even when the RST is finished

Pretty heavy so hard on consumables like tyres and brakes and suspenson components

Really rare so normally means parts are rare and expensive.

Complicated and Turbo charged means lots to go wrong.

its old now... normally means lots of tired bits

Wasnt much good as track car even when new

SOOOO..... to summarise, you would have to try VERY hard to find a worse car for the job

Some good points well made! Once stripped they really do go VERY well.

A stripped and well driven one was more than a match for my pretty highly developed 172 at Donno in November. Went well!

Mike is going to remake the existing looms rather than order new as he thinks he can salvage it into something less likely to catch fire than it is currently without needing to completely replace.

Cam cover has gone off for sand blasting and powder coating, other engine parts have been vapour blasted to clean them up.

Cams STILL "coming soon"
(will order different if no news when Mike goes to collect the pistons and rods which are meant to be in tomorrow)
Valves the only uprated ones readily available (ie not a 3-6 months wait like from G&s) are supertech, im still trying to find out if they are one or two piece though, ktec either dont know or wont say, and supertech im still waiting on details of.
If they are two piece, there is no point going for them instead of the renault ones as the temps involved wont melt the renault ones so the only risk is head depature from stem, and that will be a risk on any 2 piece anyway so pointless paying extra if the others are 2 piece too.
Im of the opinion the standard ones should be fine if new though given the lack of extreme nature of the build (ie its going to be mapped a touch rich to keep it safe and its not going to be on a mega high rev limiter either, probably 7600rpm), will talk to you about that more once I have more info though.

Other than the cams and valves it all seems to be going pretty much according to plan so far for it to start going back together next week, then the week after we'll run it and then remap it, and it should hopefully be back to you comfortably before the bedford RS day.

No one does budget trackcars like I do

Thanks again!

LOL

Take the pug blinkers off mate.

I've had all 3 - 2 of them as track cars and would put 306 first, 172 second and 205 last. I couldn't get on with the 205 on track. The alternative to a 306 would be a Zsara VTS which is the same car but look wank.

At the budget end of the track day there is simply no better than a 172, cheap, relibable and readily available.

The same can not be said of the others.

Ive owned a DC2 teg, and a Mi16 205.

Here is my teg for example:

Ive not got any blinkers on at all, im not into one specific type of car, but the fact remains the clio is a great option, and very easy to get bits for too, dc2 teg is fortunes to get a spare engine for, and a 205 is a ropey old rusty car at the price range we are talking about here ie 1500 quid, and also massively underpowered unless its been Mi'd already.
306 I personally just dont really think a lot of, they feel old without being retro, and they handle well but not on a par with a clio IMHO, also the drivers doors do have a bit of a habbit of catching fire randomly which can be annoying.

Yeah the E36 is a pretty good option too, easy to get all your spare wheels and tyres etc into.

Too heavy and too slow. They make a good road car but won't be any good on track.

Agreed, although to be fair if you just properly ripped everything out of it to get the weight down it would improve it a lot.

But it would still be slower than if you did the same thing to something less boat like in the first place.

mk5 rs2000 is actually quite a good track hack, night on bullet proff aswell.

become rare though.
206 gti 180s are getting cheap, but mine was fragile.

for the money and moderness you ent going quicker than a clio

there easy to drive aswell, which is worth noting.

If you get a clio track car, I garuntee you that you're going to hate driving your RST. Something like a Clio will highlight all the reasons RSTs are so shite to drive

Yeah mate, thats the reason I aksed. I find the rear of a Mondeo kind of erotic. Need some thrapping material.

Although, I will properly piss myself if he shows up in a Prodrive prepped ex-touring car

If he does it would be a strange way to demonstrate the benefits of a v6 roadcar as a cheap trackday hack.

Would love to see a proper works touring car one in action though

Why would you choose a Mondeo over a Clio as a track car? Be like taking the QE2 to a powerboat race!
