Default Bit of an odd 1?

Hi all right as some of you may know i have an escort van, its on a 2001/y plate and its a 1.8 td 55 i have a couple of bits that are wrong with it but 1 that i really can't understand,I'll explain right when i got the van the clock never kept the correct time and sometimes you could sit and watch it and it would go really fast! so i thought that the clock was knackered so i replaced it but guess what it does the same thing sometimes!!! see now I'm confused cos if i drive for 5-10 mins sometimes it keeps the right time and the red flashing led is bright but sometimes the red led is dull and the clock goes into spazy mode also when i'm driving you can set the right time and sometimes it will stay right but other times it goes loopy?? i'm well comfused??

any ideas guys??

Common fault and you have another crap one?
OR
Is it fed via a Voltage regulator on the dash, which has failed?
