Default Snow socks???

We have just had our first lick of real snow, whats the verdict on snow socks and can they be run on roads without snow. Our major roads have now been cleared but all the side roads are still full of snow!

Im getting 4 snow tires for the golf but the mrs will be using this for work so al be needing to use the Focus RS whilst she is out?

Im not planning on shelling out ££££ on winter tires for the Focus as i dont really want to use it but needs must?

Just looking for some feedback off anyone that has used them?

CheeRS

The snow socks will rip if run for to long off the snow, but it only takes a minute to put them on or off anyway even got long gloves to keep you clean.

Just bear in mind that any socks / mesh / chain, are ONLY any good on snow, so the moment you arent on snow anymore (ie a bit of salted tarmac) you have to take them off again.

So they are ok as an emergency thing if you are literally stuck, but other than that you cant just go driving around on them.

Probably sounds obvious but amazingly that is what some people have been doing, and they last all of 5 minutes and are totally unsafe of course on tarmac!

I've got winter tyres, at least you can just fit those now and leave them on a few months, and they are noticeably better than normal tyres.

"winter" for tyre changes is anything below 7degrees!
and yes winter tyres are fine on normal non-snow`d tarmac roads

try the big blue "fast fit" centre near you lol

Yes, but I tend to wait until its colder than that as I dont have a problem on normal tyres until we get down to the temps likely to have snow, as the winter ones wear a lot quicker at 7 degrees than summer ones which work fine anyway.

So I normally change over when we get the first few bits of snow, which we havent had yet where I live or work.

Apoogies if I made it sound like they wear out in 5 minutes, they arent that bad, its just that I do a lot of miles (2-3k a month ish normally)
On my daily I get through winters at about the rate of 1mm per 1500 miles, so they only last me a couple of months where as normal tyres I get more than triple that.

The golf that the mrs drives to work gets 4x snow tires but im left with a Mk2 focus RS or a V8 mk1 sierra when she's at work I dont mind using the Focus in this weather but im not paying for a set of alloys then snow tires on top of that just to use it when its needed. Ive usually got a works van to tramp about in but no so much luck this year!

All im worried about is having to ditch the Focus at the side of the road, snow socks seem like the best and cheapest alternative for me

as said on snow the socks will be fine, but will shred very quickly on cleared roads.

this time last year when we had bad snow a mate lent me a set of snow chains for my work van, as i was on call and got a job to go from swindon to pembroke dock on the saturday, as pee vee had got stuck trying to get there on the friday.

anyway i got as far as chippenham and thought fuck that, im not doing 165 miles at zero visibilty and 40mph max...

so stopped at my mates and we stuck them on. they are fucking amazing and you are not supposed to use them on cleared roads but when i got on the motorway to go back home a couple of hours later it was then cleared by a plough lol, but i couldnt stop to take them off as the hard shoulder was still under a foot of snow so i ended up doing 30mph down the motorway lol

all the cars i had pissed past ont he duel carrageway then overtook me

anyway, imo go for chains lol. bit harder to fit but much better all round IMO

unless you have propper winter tyres, then there is no need to fuck about

Been using proper winter tyres for years now ,left all that pissing about with chains and snow socks long ago ,last thing you want to be doing if the time comes is actually putting them on in the cold and snow, set of winter tyres will probably last us 4 winters ,thats on in november and off in april and a ski holiday each year aswell

Snow socks

Proper winter tires will wear out pretty quick, Studded tires are the best but no good for the UK .. Then theres the ball ache of changing them over if you have TPMS etc ..

I ran Goodridge generals A/T's through two winters and new Wrangler A/T's this winter, Have little to no traction problems even in extreme winter conditions.

Winters or Chains are the law here between OCT - March
