They did a feature on 5th gear recently.
Relaunched in the UK I think.
They rated it highly.

They were always regarded as being very capable in the mud. Obviously they're dog shit on road. I'd have one still but not at that money, rock some offset rims and muds and go upset the landy boys.

I used to clean cars at a Lada and Proton garage when i was at school. They had a 2nd hand samara in 2 tone sat there for years, i washed it every week and nobody ever looked at it, i helped in the workshops in the bad weather and sitting in Early 90's Ladas was like sitting in a 50/60's Ford/Vauxhall etc... I always felt sorry for the salesman, how shit must you be to end up out of 3 dealerships in a group to end up selling Protons and Ladas.

My dad and stepmum bought a Niva Cossack brand new back in 1994, we went all over the place in it and it was a very capable car. We even took it off roading at the LRO show in about 1995 and it performed very well getting into all the places all the others could get with no real bother.

I like Lada's

For what they were, a tool to get you A to B, they were good and could be fixed with a shoelace (Literally in the case of my uncle's Samara ). What was the 4x4? A niva? I'd have one of them.

Car LADA 4x4 is the best designer product , which combines passenger car comfort and off-road mobility. "Niva" filled the empty space within in the market.

"Niva" - a car with high passability, which started produce in 1977. Main and cardinal changes which car introduced was self-supporting body and the constant drive on all four wheels (from a off-road cars only Range Rover had at that equivalent model) with the axle locking differential.

Another feature of this unique car was the use of units of passenger cars. So, its engine was created based on the model of 2106, gearbox and rear axle is also borrowed from this machine. Despite this, the "Niva" has a unique feature of such a machine trafficability.

Increased permeability and comfort - hallmarks of the car "Niva". This is the most suitable vehicle for driving off-road, traveling to remote places, travel, hunting, fishing. Folding rear seat allows you to place and carry different loads. Connector door luggage on the floor level ensures easy loading and unloading.

They used to make good rally cars, very robust and cheap to repair/maintain. Still don't like them though.

I remember it! Shame Dave (as fas as I'm aware) doesn't show these older top gears, so much better than the latest shit. I'm sure they did a thing with it once with cooking food under the bonnet of it, that car and like 2 others were driven around the track, remember that?

All jokes aside the old LADA is actually decent .. Good old communist design.

Dont think a shonky old Ford could handle the Russian North day in day out.

Keep it simple .. Cannot comment on the newer models.
