Living right by the zone boundary and owning a smiley faced Transit is going to cause me some right grief come January 2012, i'm wondering if anyone has a van in the same sort of era as mine - Mk5/2001 and has looked into the cost of these special exhaust systems we will have to get?
My van is not the easiest on the eye but the chassis is mint and it flys thru its mot's so i'm very reluctant to get rid of it, mainly cos no one will buy it because its not LEZ compliant and because of how it looks!![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
![Surprised](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/bigcry.gif)
I'm wondering what options i have other than a £2k exhaust system
I've considered implanting an engine/loom/exhaust from a later transit - Mk6/7 to mine as the costs of that would maybe be around half of the exhaust system alone, but i'm not sure whats what as mine is a bit of a random.... It has C/L, Heated E/M, A/C, 6 seats and is an Auto
And the Dartford Crossing class it as a car as it has glass all the way round, so i only pay £1.50 per crossing.
Any thoughts or simular worries you wanna share...?

my mate had a perfectly good 2000ish ford transit, could not sell it, had to weigh it in for scrap, and get a newer van!
Its a load of toss
know a fair few people afected again, misses had to out her horse box a few years back in the 1st wave of this.
And that exhaust shite, im guessing is a partical filter, which are crap, if you just drive about town!

Good luck with getting the DVLA to allow you to convert its use.
MY god-parents have a 1984/5 Defender 90 with the Perkins diesel engine. It is not LEZ-compliant as the DVLA class it as a utility vehicle, even though it has windows and rear seats.
We have been trying for over 6 months to get it re-registered as a station wagon (passenger carrying Defender) but to no avail so far.
I know of one person in the Land Rover community who has converted his to V8 petrol within the last year and the DVLA are making it impossible for him as they know everybody is going to look @ converting to petrol so as to avoid the zone charging.
One thing you could try is to fit a bed and cooker assembly, which would then be classed as a camping vehicle and is automatically exempted, whether petrol or diesel. My mate's parents round the corner from me have a Transporter which was a panel van (new) and went to a coachbuilders to be converted. DVLA are fine with this and it is exempt from the charging.

The vehicle is a imported Toyota Townace from Japan, which is equivilant to the Toyota Space Crusier, i.e. a 8 seater people carrier, with us it was a bit different though as ours a) Isn't a light utility vehicle and B) Is 2WD
It has taken us over 2 months and we have only just after a long battle got the Body type changed to the correct "MPV" (Which is what it should have been anyway, as they classed it wrong in the first place)
To the OP there is nothing you can do other than get a DPF fitted (With TFL'S discount) or convert it to petrol, as yours is a van, or do what Ian has mentioned.

cant it be your friends van who lives within the zone?
is it like the congestion charge where you live within limits its then 90% discount?
if you cant sell the van sell it further away where it doent matter, you say LEZ to people up here and they ask butch or ugly?

It does not have to be driving. If an enforcement vehicle drives past and catches it, you are fined in the post.

you have to fit a dpf to the exhaust to a certain specification and have it tested and all that bollocks
it's either got to be euro something compliant or a newer than a certain year vehicle (which is changing next year to newer vehicles) so it's a right confusing ball ache
or ask over at www.fordtransit.org as i'm sure someone will have the answer

Nope, if the vehicle is seen within the zone @ any time after the 4th January 2012, 24 hours a day and is not compliant then you will receive a bill for £100, each and every day, 7 days a week.

I dont get it....how are they expecting a city to function, if they dont allow vans or diesel vehicles in it ?
Surely that's going to create massive price hikes everywhere for goods etc ?
They'd be better just burning london to the ground and starting from scratch again

The lez meant I just sold my 2000 w reg smiley 190 Lwb. Put it on e bay no mot and no tax it was a good looking one. My phone didnt stop ringing and text messages, I pulled it early and it went for £800 so don't weigh it in they are exporting them into eastern Europe. A gearbox for one is worth £100 odd here and £600 over there. Ps the newer transits are more juicy too

Welcome to the club mate, we have finally just won our battle with the DVLA and was in exactly the same situation you are, i.e. with the body type on the logbook being "4x4/Light Utility Vehicle".
The vehicle is a imported Toyota Townace from Japan, which is equivilant to the Toyota Space Crusier, i.e. a 8 seater people carrier, with us it was a bit different though as ours a) Isn't a light utility vehicle and B) Is 2WD

i thought i read on the transit forum that even a smily mk5 transit is ok for now as long as its late enough regestered, and as yours is a 2001 it should be ok, go have a read on the transit forum and see what others have done, or keep van and drop the 2.0 DOHC petrol engine in it.

6 months? Really? What have you done in those 6 months? We've got a 110 200tdi, and also got lumped in with the 'pull a landy out of the hat and charge it' scheme. Re-registered with the DVLA, took like a week, wrote a letter to TFL explaining it, got a letter back saying it's exempt, Job jobbed in less than a month...

I don't think you would be to happy if it was you who had to fork out after 4 years of recession. I thought a newer van may pay for itself in the long run with fuel savings, but it's not worked out that way! It's fucking worse
in my eyes it's a complete waste to get rid of a ten year old van, but I'm glad you are happy ![Content](https://passionford.com/forum/images/smilies/content.gif)

i agree it has hit smaller businesses hard, and it is a little narrow minded to lump in commercial vehicles that are non commercial use, but ultimately if it improves air quality it cant be a bad thing

Too many posts.. I need a life!!

Some smiley faced transits are now lez zone compliant, as quite a few people with the early mk6's complained that there vans where compliant as the they had the same engine as the compliant 2002 on vans, so with the help of ford all mk6 vans are now compliants that were registered after 2000, dvla now think all transits after 2000 are compliant even though some were late registered smiley faced ones so if you have a late reg mk5 check the lez zone site to check your van before doing anything.
Also fitting a petrol engine makes them compliant even though they arent as economical as the diesel, but saying that with the difference in price between petrol and diesel it doesnt make that much of a difference.
Hopefully that all made sense.
oh and on a seperate note mk6 transits wont be compliant after 2015 if i remember reading it right, so people who have bought a mk6 to upgrade from a mk5 will have to do the same in a few years time.
