Will my saff cossie do 200mph????
ok, chaps here goes!!
my cossie im building, ive been looking at gear ratios.
im using a standard box with standard rear diff ratio
so
on 225/40/18 the rolling radius is 6.57 inches
1st 2.95
2nd 1.95
3rd 1.34
4th 1
5th 0.8
3.64 diff ratio and a rev limit of 8000rpm, (will be 8250 but 8k for the speeds)
now my speeds per gear (225/40/18)
1st 56mph
2nd 84mph
3rd 122mph
4th 164mph
5th 205mph
now speed per gear for 225/40/17
1st 53 mph
2nd 81mph
3rd 118mph
4th 158mph
5th 197mph
does these seem right??
seems overly high geared!
ps, im not really trying to do 200mph just wondered why its so long geared

this is the best gear calculator i have found http://www.f-body.org/gears/
and its long geared because 5th is for economy not top speed

Most cars are geared pretty high. I was doing some calculations for my car with an MTX box, and it would do 180mph with about 8k revs on big-ish wheels.
Just power and aero get in the way of such things

As has been said the gearing may be there but pushing the taxi through the air towards this speed is something else, not to mention you "have" to do it at brunters
What power you looking for?

Figures work out the same on my ratio calc sheet
When you put on standard 205/50x 15 tyres and drop the rpm down to 6000 or 6500 it comes to 141 & 153 mph which would be about right.
You would need a lot of power to get to 8k.

520 ish would be my eventual power, i imagine over 180s at brunters but don't really know! Rod will tell all

Oh I know, I would like to think power will be peak at 7.5 and barely fall until 8 so I think it should be pulling hardest at 7.5k It's just down to does it have the power to pull it! Answer being no I think

t5's are silly high geared anyway
the last box in my impreza was also silly high geared too as its had 3.9 diff in a uk gearbox so the idea was lower revs so less fuel wasted when i sit on the motorway at around a ton to 120 ( germany ofcourse)
down side is the car dont have the power to push the gears required and the powerband was also all wrong for it with the size of the turbo so it was bloody slow to drive than the old box but was mint on fuel when i got it going but had to down shift to 4th on motorways to get the speed back up

Omsk! Guys let me clear this up, the title wasn't serious just me being a ASW lol!
I just wanted to know about gear ratios as I couldn't believe std gearing could be possible of 200+!
Maybe one day I'll have a proper crack at it, but not for a few years!

Carlo 196 is 200bhp short of record Power but they didnt believe my Power so asked me to attend to see the record destroyed . I remember taking stick from you when i said they were 150bhp short & had no chance. Remember the Topspeed record is maths not bullshit so you cant fudge it & its best to listen to someone that knows about these things, maths is my game.
To take on my car today will require 1000+bhp cos why you lot chat garbage on here my car is still being developed. 860bhp now off gas & 300bhp 'push' potential. All i want is a challenger but they aint there, of course the Topspeed record is not important & who cares but the number of times that certain people bring it up & start the sniping suggest it is .
I will be back on probably Wednesday lads so plenty of time to vent your spleens & change nothing .

Didn't he say he actually started it as he was unsure of whether his gear calculations were correct? The rest was just a bit of banter?
Perhaps I'm the only person that just finds all this Cosworth top speed nonsense rather boring

To answer your question...
As far as gearing goes yes you can theoretically (spelling?) do 200+mph on standard gearing with the wheel size you have mentioned.
As far as power wise (525-535bhp) you will do about 185mph.

and i sure like most a passenger ride would be a brick your pant better than hearsay
But Rod the has done it
Jimbo why you asking on hear thought your old man does this for a living like but Mark Shead try and develop rods ok with a little help just not a forum ! Not ask Joe dontknow !

In theory, with enough room, ye I'd say 200 was achivable, but you'd need a huge strech of tarmac. Also I have huge respect for your car Rod, but it won't hold the record forever. Out of interest, what about the Norewegan/Greek monster power cossies hitting? Quite a few of them are putting out 700+bhp power figures, I'm sure with the right gearing there could be a few more in the 200mph club.

Oh FFS here we go.
Rod your WAY off the Mark, I have NO interest in doing 200mph, if I, or scs had wanted to, it would have been done along time ago. Please just read my post seriously, I wanted to know about standard gear ratios, not who's got the fastest car FFS! Mines gonna have a shonky old t4 on and be in my eyes the ultimate rods car.
You boys are WAY off the Mark, please don't bring scs and mad into this, its not my aimsM

Im sure Jimbo started this thread to bring out the Anti-Rod brigade so bring it on lets have a battle with the Harvey wannabees . I do understand that me having the fastest car is annoying & owned by a senile old fart must really get through to the youngsters but while they bite i will wind them up. The internet is a wonderfull toy for this but facts are facts my car is & will remain the fastest .

I'm glad it's not just me that just saw it as a question about gear ratios then
To be honest, all you need to do 200mph is a big enough cheque book and the right tuner. I can think of a few that could achieve it (and some that have of course). It's about having the money to spend, and the desire to spend it on chasing a number.
Rod's car is impressive for what it's done, but the only reason the record still stands is because no one else is really that interested in spending the money to beat it. Most people would rather go round tracks now than hit big speeds.

It's funny seeing Rodders wade into the equation throwing knowledge at people left, right and centre.. without reading the question properly.
Rod's car will be the ultimate Rod's car surely?

He does hark on about it and he gets loads of stick for it but in person he's a genuine gentleman, has been around for a lot longer than most on this site (that includes me)
he gets a lot of stick in the workshop too but he can take it, a lot of people think they can wind him up but in truth they can't, as they say its tough at the top

Rod you took that one hook line & sinker PMSL we are not worthy ! seriously get a life although its too late for you now your too stuck in your ways ! its about time you realised that your the only one that wants a taxi to do these speeds apart from a few nobody gives a fuck ! Nice one for biting tho keep it up

In all seriousness, what ha been achieved with Rods car is mega impressive, and i doubt it will be beaten, it's just a shame the owner comes across as such an arse!!
If he's such a great bloke in person, how can he come across as such a rude, arrogant arse on the internet? Does someone else write his replies?

Ahhh mad rod, that's his name, yeah he did over 200mph in one, thanks for reminding me lads.
Strange to see him posting about it though,he's usually really quiet about the fact his Sierra does 200mph?
