Default Personalised plate question.........

Okay, here's the score.

I've got a Renault Laguna with a personalised plate on, but the engine snapped a timing chain (3.0 V6), and is beyond economical repair.

The problem is, to transfer the plate to an existing vehicle, or to put it on retention, the car it's on needs to have a valid MOT - clearly that is never going to happen.

How can I get the plate off the car so I can scrap it, and still get to keep my plate?

I thought that you could get the plate off the car within, say, 6 months of the MOT expiring. Think about it, its a bit unfair if your car unexpectedly fails the MOT and is beyond economical repair. OK, so you would have to be a total IMA to not notice it getting that bad, but it could happen.

pon if ya really like the plate i think ive found a mailorder mot place , i cant always get em but im getting one for my orion

failing that i can get blanks but there risky

*disclamer, all of this stuff is totally legal as the guy will fit a new cam belt and time the cam then mot the car and remove the belt and fit all old valves again hence why its a slight bit more than a normal mot due to labour costs

pon if the tax has been out then the dvla will wanna inspect ya car in a random check ( trust me on this one, yax gap is the ranodm check ), as long as ya get a mot and tax it then say in 4 months apply via post for a transfer and then they will send a guyb out to ya and confirm its a car thats broken down, ( can not be stripped though, must be a complete car !!!!) then they will transfer the plate

How far out is it ?

I took a plate off one of my cars in January and the MOT had on it ran out the previous month (December). Took the statutory 72 hours and no questions asked.

In fact just reading form V100 and associated booklet INF46 it says...

Vehicles must be currently licenced, or in the process of being licenced. Applications will still be considered if the donor vehicle's licence (tax disc) expired within 6 months of the date of application. If the licence has been voluntarily surrendered for refund, the 6 month concession does not apply.
And in the notes on the application form it asks for
A test certificate for each vehicle that requires one
What it does not say is a valid test certificate. So if you have your old one which has expired and was taxed within the previous 6 months then just send it off. All they do is stamp it with the cherished transfer stamp and write on the new (old) number in pen. They may wish to inspect either vehicle so do not dispose or sell the donor vehicle untill the process has been fully completed and you receive your V778.

Typed whilst you replied with 3 years ago I can't copy and paste from a booklet

You have no chance unless it gets re-taxed

oh and DVLA are not very helpfull as they wont give ya any straight answers at all !!!!

when i phoned em and said my car was broken into in me garage and stripped and i wanna transfer me plate ect, could get a police report ect for it as proof can i transfer the plate they said they couldnt garantee they would as the car has to be a compleate car or i will loose the rights to it

So what's the deal, you pay the DVLA for a private plate and they get it back for free if you scrap the car?

Sounds a bit unfair to me!

If your insurers have not disposed of the vehicle, it is available for inspection, and it satisfies the conditions of transfer or retention then its not a problem.

If this ever happens and you own a plate it is imperative that you tell your insurance company that the vehicle may be subject to inspection from the DVLA, and for them not to dispose of it.

If they do the rights to the number are automatically transfered to the new keeper / salvage company.

If a vehicle is stolen and not recovered after 12 months you can apply to have it re-assigned. In that instance the theft must have been reported to the police and DVLA, and at the time of theft, a current tax disc and MOT certificate must have been in force. You then need a letter from your insurance company to state they have no objections. This is because if the vehicle is later found and you have been paid out on it, the vehicle actually at that point belongs to them (the insurance company).

If a vehicle is scrapped or broken up for parts, if you do not transfer the number first, it is cancelled once notification has gone to the DVLA. From that point it can no longer be recovered or transfered.

So what you're saying is that because of how long it's been since it was taxed/MOT'd, I need a bent MOT.

That's absolutely ridiculous - talk about encouraging people to break the law!

The only reason I ask on here, is because the DVLA "don't know"

try and get a bent mot now mate, they aint as easy trust me if been trying for a while on my car

last year i had 3 people off, this year ive had to ask loads of people and only 1 has came back good so far but its not 50 quid like i used to pay, its over a ton

oh and its not DVLA dont know, they wont tell you anything incase the situation is different and wont confirm anyinfomation untill the vehicle is checked

hence why i never bothered and im getting a mot on the orion bent and then gonna take it into em

yes pon they are basicly forcing people be more clever or they run the risk of loosing ya plate

private plates are a right pain in the arse on older cars now
