Question engine oil in cosworth? is halfords as good as any other?

just popped into halfords as i need to replace the engine oil in the cossie...

after a full rebuild i was advised by harvey gibbs to run it in with some slightly cheaper semi-synthetic stuff, now that its run in 500 miles (ish)
its began to smoke, i believe this is because the engine oil has taken a battering under the hot turbo conditions

So now its time to drain it all and stick in the correct 5/50
I was a little bit dubious using cheap £30 halfords 5/50 fully synthetic but the guy reassures me that they get it from castrol and its the same stuff in a different bottle

I have worked in places where ive witnessed this thing all too often, the same stuff re-packaged at different prices but what i want to know is if anybody has had any experience with halfords oil in their YB,
is one brand of 5/50 the same as the next or are there differences in quality

cheers Steve

I use Hlafords full synthetic 5/30 in my non turbo'd track car.

I used to run Mobil 1, but the cost was starting to bite, so I looked for some cheaper stuff.

Now as Halfords sell both brands, I compared the info on both back to back, and the Halfords full synth matched all the Mobil stuff. There where a lot of acronyms on the back, and testing standards, but from what I could see, the Halfords brand matched.

As a bonus, the Halfords one comes in 5 litre cans and is cheaper!

As long as the products match the same standards, I do not see a problem?

Run it in on Mineral oil, nothing more. Cheap as chips and will give adequate protection as necessary whilst running in.

After that, I don't use anything other than 10/50 Silkolene (or Titan as its called also)

You can get a good discount on their own oils if you have a trade card too.

You have had a proper Harvey Gibbs rebuild.... and yet you wanna try and save what £15 by mucking around with cheap engine oil?

Weird.... if you are only doing £5k miles then its gonna be a once a year change.

So I'd want the very best in there. I use Titan (Silkolene)

I'm sure the Halfords stuff will be adequate... but why risk it?

P.S I'd be worried about the smoking....

i built the engine myself but got a bit of advice off harvey since hes just down the road.

There seems to be so many different opinions but my view is that if im using 5w50 fully synthetic which is what was originally recommended by ford then i cant go far wrong surely?

amen to that!

IMO if the oil has taken a battering from the hot turbo conditions then you've not ran the engine in correctly. i'd ring harvey and ask what he recomends.

I think he built the engine him self but took some info from Harvey

I'm running mine in on Catrol GTX and have 2 tubs of Titan here for afterwards

Ford recommendations are fine at standard power, but I wouldn't trust Ford's advice when passing 300bhp. Stick to what's tried and tested, if you wanna be cheap at the final stage, then put cheap crap shit in there from Halfrauds. Otherwise, put something in there that has the correct additives to prolong the life of your engine i.e. Silkolene

How can it be 'cheap crap shit' if the Halfords full synth meets the same specification standards as Mobil 1?

Granted the container is not as flash, nor the marketing hype, but that's not what you really want to be paying for, is it?

**EDIT** Just found this little bit of info, though its a few years old...

'Yes Halfords oil is supplied by a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil." However this does not mean it is supplied by mobil or advertised under the mobil label.'

This of course does not mean that IT IS the same stuff.

i do see where your comming from cochyn and silkolene does seem to be the general way to go, not heard a single bad point of it yet,
But then again Icurus pretty much made the point i was trying to get acrost. Is the halfords stuff any worse than the competitors just because its not in a flashy container,
at the end of the day it still reaches the 5w50 fully synthetic specification and probably comes from the same supplier.

I was using Halfords 5w30 Semi Synth and Carlube in my Focus.
Changes to Millers Trident 5w30 semi synth and getting better economy and the cars quieter Wasen't expensive either, just the fact it's a decent brand seemed to help!

it all depends how you will use the car really as oil brakes down with heat! mine has an m.a.d 500 set up and my oil never gos above 80 degress c really as a road car so im happy using the 10w40 shell fully syn we have on tap at work if i used it hard on track id use a better oil that stands up to high temps better!

Suits my 180bhp n/a engine just fine, maybe with the money I save, i'll be able to buy a big boys turbo engine......

why do people scrimp on oil?its in the car alot longer than fuel and no one thinks i will put a shitty mix fuel in.most run cossies on shelloptimax or bp ultimate which you should.
oil is the cars life blood.
i run motul. one of the top two or three oil brands. other wise i would use castrol or silkolene

even our focus tdci runs high quality motul.

I don't think people realise the importance of oil, probably just think its there to just lubricate and that's it

Why worry, Its a cossie and will break down in less than a year what ever oil's in it!!!!!

Only joking, why skimp and save a few quid on oil as its one of the most important things to get right on a high end motor. Get it wrong and the bill will be far greater than the savings!!!!
