Default car (mondeo 2.0 petrol mk3)is running hot - what to do?

after several weeks of fucking about, i finally got the mondeo back on the road again to go the middx meet this monday night

but when i got there, and opened the bonnet, i thought someone had transplanted a heard of turbos in there as the heat was incredible

and there were water marks down the front of the grille, but no leaks that i could see

on the way home, it started making some funny noises too from the drivebelt area, squeaks and grumbles and stuff, plus when the fans kicked in the revs would drop and it would almost stall

checked the water, all good, checked the oil, all good, so what else could be causing it to run very very hot (the temp gauge shows bang in the middle as per normal) and cause the weird noises?

thats what im thinking martin as i reckon the bimmer has done the same - although the gauge did goto the red on mine but luckily i was round the corner from home so no harm done.

Dojj - park it up. Ives just driven the BM 1.3 miles and its been fine

waterpump would defo be my first port of call. shouldnt be expensive, unless you go to ford. would expect it to be around Ł50 from a motor factors. only ever changed them on a V6, and thats a piece of piss, the only job that is on V6 though

Some of the fins may have broke off the plastic waterpump, mine did this on my 03 1.8 LX, which ment it was still circulating water but not properly because half of the fins on the impellor had disentegrated ran hot, and fans on all the time but temp guage seemed to always stay at same level which i too found odd

If you have an IR temp gun I'd check to see what the hose temperatures are as well to see if your gauge is telling porkies or not or just being lazy waiting for the engine to cook itself before it starts reading hot. One of the reason I'm thankful I have my own plumbed in.

Temperature gauges on modern Fords (Never had/looked at anything else) aren't true temperature gauges from what I have seen, rather than are more of a all's well, all's not well, far better than the inaccurate older types, they were more paranoia gauges! I believe they are part of CAN Bus.

I believe they will only go into the red under the hottest temperatures, although if you are actually overheating it don't get much hotter than that

They also have some pretty cool strategies whereby fueling can be cut on cylinders so they act as air pumps thus aiding to cool the engine down.

The hardest job I've done in the Mindel so far was the air con pump (which took about 5 months) so he water pump should be a doodle

Do I need to resort to the Haynes book of fables to work out where the stat is though?

Grille and headlight removal take less than 30 seconds! If that's a 'proper fucker' I'd hate to see you swap the aux tensioner

check the fans see if one is seized? had this on Mk2, it melted the wiring and the relay/fuse plugs and wires ??
when they tried to kick in the revs dropped due to the load on the alt.

Will do that too mate, but it just means stripping he whole front end down so that I can get underneath, not bad on your cooking models but I've screwed the st kit on which means about 11 millions nuts and bolts and screws and clips to get out of he way again
