Renault Clio V6??
#3
did have a look at buying one a while back, but when i joined the V6 owners club they kinda put me off the car.... just simple things though like always having to drive with air con on due to heat from the engine and having to spend loads modding it to get it to be fairly decent.....
If you do get one though get a phase 2 as the phase ones are pritty much racing cars with road tyres on so are unstable in high speed bends apparently... whereas the phase 2's have been set up for road use....

I've driven an early one and it was terrible and frightening, it would just chuck the back out and do like a tank slapping motion all up the road.
And I drove a Clio 182 cup and it was awesome I had such a blast in it and would love to own one.
Lol I've even driven a 200 cup and I'm sold they are fantastic

So phase 2 is the preferred option, interesting to hear.
Like the 172,182 and the new 200. Just thought I would try something different for a change. as they do look interesting and sound very nice. Also seem to hold there value well the phase 2.

Just one of them cars that's always caught my attention, the look, sound.
Guess I will have to research more into them to make my mind up.
Would be a weekend toy for me, possibly the odd track day.

Never drove one but do like the look of them.
One of my mates worked with someone that built them and he said that he would never own one after seeing the bodges that went into them during the original build up.

Would you say twitchy due to it being mid engined and having to adjust to the V6 characteristics?

A 172 is quicker with the same level of driver skill on the road.
It's a real shame they should have been awesome.

Ive owned a phase 2 for a year.
I did enjoy it and got the most looks in it ever (it was rare liquid yellow)
Cambelt is a big job on them and so is the clutch (engine out ) so look out for it allready being done?
Yes the car is twitchy but yes its a very short wheelbase and shit steering lock, what you have to remember is the engine is in the back so there isnt any weight on the front so its tends to bob on the front. If youve ever driven a porsche is a similar feeling. So what it does mean is you have to change your driving style if you wana go fast. Down the back roads a 172 would destroy it but as uve said it isnt power your botherd about.
They arnt any quicker to 60 than a 172 but past 80+ they keep pulling cos of the v6 power. I never had a problem with steaming/heat inside, it was a pleasure to drive and had a lovley v6 growel inside the cabin.
Id definitly have another. The boxes to tick are good investment/ stunning looks/ if you only need two seats.
negatives would be the steering lock/ not easy to tune up/

Thanks for the heads up, 2 seats does not bother me power and speed really is not a issue. will be left standard.
What I wanted to hear really, think I will have to view some to see if there for me ideally.
After doing some more research I hear the phase 2 is developed by Porsche
Thanks for the feedback

Drove a Phase 1 from Bath to Crail and back a few years ago. I nearly lots it within 5 mins of getting into it in the middle of Bath centre! Proper twitchy bastards. Then nearly lost it again coming off the sliproad from a service station. It never felt stable at speed, and was kinda terrifying the whole time. As said a regular standard 172 would destroy it down a country lane, as they don't inspire confidence at all.
The steering lock is a complete joke too.
In its defence, it looked the part, sounded ace, and there was a real sense of occasion about it, which few standard cars have.
Never driven a Phase 2, but by all accounts they are a lot better.

That looks a weapon
Seen couple down my road, they do look interesting and you hardly see any about.
Knowing me I probably end up with a E46 M3

nice cars. I like them a fair bit.
to be fair, most of the annoying things can to an extent be improved, eg steering lock, better suspension to stabilise the handling etc. Plus plenty of tuning options if you want more power.

phase 1 and 2 are completely and utterly undriveable.
martin johnston had 1 and so did a m8 of mine, both sold them quickly after they had a good drive....
nice to look at but thats that.

I've often fancied one but figured out it would be a waste of money as it would undoubtedly end up in a ditch
On a serious note i really do like them. They look and sound awesome. Obviously they're always going to be a handful but if you aren't bothered about the speed then it can't be that much of an issue.

I was glad to give the car back at the end of the week!

phase 1s are really twitchy as dan found out. phase 2s are a lot better and in the dry unless your pushing the limit hard on the road, then you really wont have any problems. But then you shouldnt be pushing the handling limits on the road anyway
Log onto cliov6 forum and read the article on modifying the steering Having only driven, not owned one i wouldnt know off my head what was done.

they are a lot better and less twitchy than the phase 1s which is what i said.... they will always be on the limit twitchy to a degree no matter who made or designed it due to the short wheelbase and layout. That element is unavoidable.
IMO they handle very well upto the limit. So as a road car i dont see the problem. I looked at getting one (along with other options) before i got my puma, and test drove several of them and they arent bad if driven sensibly and you can still have a lot of fun driven hard within the handling limits.

A Guy I used to work with had two Phase One Clio V6's.
He wrecked the first one within a month...........he bought the second one Second Hand although only a few months old.
You guessed it - he wrote that off as well.
However, in his own admission he's a crap driver.........
I've been a Phase One & Two, and I loved them.......defo on my Bucket List.

The suspension on the Ph1 was developed by TWR, and yes, its tricky ! Another weak point is the gearbox (PK6).
The Ph2 was developed and improved by Renault Sport.
Nice car, collectors item. Very expansive overseas (18.000-40.000 €)

Yeh if you can look past his body mods, the vibration noise on when de-celerating, and noisy charger belt everytime it gets high in the revs its still awesome

personally think it will make a good weekend/track car if you can get over the little niggles..... as said by most, looks the part sounds the part, isnt going to de-value the second you add another mile on the clock....
think though on public roads it needs to be treated more like a show car than a race car otherwise it could end in tears quite easily! lol
if i ever have a spare £10-£12k to spend on a car id probably look into them aagin just purley cause of the looks and sounds.... i think its on the "i will own this car before i die" list.....
