It's a shame, cos it's a nice looking car, especially in Phase 3 form, and has a good chassis, but it doesn't feel a complete package to me with such a shonky interior, and the clutch/gear shift spoil it a bit, but then I've never liked that in any French hot hatch I've driven.

Each to their own at the end of the day
Seriously???

The gear change is great - so precise and quick. The one I had was at 108k before I got my hands on it and it was FUCKED out of its head and was still miles better than the RS2k I took to the ring...

I've had RS2000's in the past and can hand on heart say my current 306 gti-6 is better in every single way. Ive been all over europe in mine this summer, done trackdays and been round Spa and the 'ring and its been faultless, does 140mph on the autobahn, yet still manages 43mpg on a cruise.

Even minirotty has praised mine and he's the rs2000 guru!!

Mine....

Probably the nicest one I've seen, that. Those wheels suit it perfectly.

Ok, I'll give you the rust thing As you say, great for different people. Ive always been a big Escort fan, and just prefer the looks and interior. They still drive well enough, so I'd rather sacrifice a bit of performance for the other stuff.

As I said, nothing to do with blinkers, I just prefer the RS. I'll openly admit it isn't as good technically, but I prefer it. Like I said, each to their own.

Perfectly seriously. I've never driven a French car with a gear change I liked. The RS isn't amazing, the IB5 Escorts have a nicer shift I think but there we are. I just didn't find the GTI-6 that precise, perhaps I drove a bad one.

It's all personal opinion. The 306 is quicker and handles better, but lacks in other areas for me. I've never liked the seating in any 306 I've been in, I just can't get that comfortable in them, I don't like the clutches (again, in any Pug/Cit I've driven), and I think the shoddy, unsupportive seats compared to the RS let it down.

I just prefer the feel of the Escort, the noise, interior, looks. We're all entitled to our own preferences

The grey 306 above looks nice, what are the wheels on it? Recognise them?

They are a replica of the old mid 90's Speedline Group A Maxi tarmac rally wheel, made by Compomotive to special order. 7x16" with massive clearance for 330mm brakes.

Thought that's what they looked like! They're really nice, suit it well. Is a special order like that pricey, or was it a group buy?

Yes, and this whole thread is based on people's opinion on which is better Just because I don't agree with the majority, I'm still allowed to think the RS is a better all rounder.

They were expensive thats for sure. I dealt direct with Compomotive in Wolverhampton. I think theres only about half a dozen Pugs with them in the uk.

Having drove a few 306 gti-6s and a rallye, as well as owning a xsara vts and a mk6 rs2000.....i would 100% go for the 306. Defo up there in the best value car that money could buy these days. Saying that, i have owned 7 saxos (4 x vts and 3 x vtr's) and a 106 gti...and a really well set up 16v saxo or 106 will easily have any standard or mildly tuned 306 gti-6!! Also a saxo or 106 16v will hold its value better than a 306 and they are easier on fuel too. Also they dont get mistaken for a d-turbo :P

Tbh rs2000s are shite!! Sound brilliant, but drive crap and are not even fast or comfortable!

Oh lord, must be expensive then. Nice though, makes the car a bit unique. Remember seeing them on the 106 Maxi back in the day. Think the old Group A Clio Williams used them too.

Nice looking wheels anyway!

Like most cars of this age, there will be good and bad examples of both. Take for example my RS2000 mk6 i had, it was rotten as a conker underneath, even though the arches and outerpanels looked ok. I just never gelled with it, especially after lots of S2 RST's. Conversely there are a lot of shitter 306 gti's around.

I took ages to find the Pug, and have refreshed lots of the suspension components to make it even better on track, without ruining the road manners. I understand the "french" element and stuff, but like most things in life, buy a good one and you wont regret it. The chassis and handling of the 306 is regarded in most circles as one of the best hot hatches for balance and poise, and its true, its as adjustable as you want, ie smooth lines and lap times are fast, be lairy and its oversteer central.

I was pleased to read on my local rsoc forum that Kev (Minirotty) had finally got his bumder ass behind the wheel of one and rated it!!

Saying that, a nicely modded RS2k is a handy tool as well, and with folks like Kev pushing the boundaries with his projects, its good to see.

I appreciate when a car is a good car mate, the GTi6 shocked me at how good a package it is.

I can modify an RS2K and it'd leave a GTi6 standing but thats not what the lads asked.

I wont defend the RS2K any more on here as poeple know I love it but I wont be blinkered in standard form.

I drove an RS2K down the M6 Sunday and obliterated a Focus RS MKII, the RS2K was 305BHP @ 320lbps though any car can be made fast and to handle with money thrown at it.

But for value for money you can go get a GTi6 for £1000 that is mint underbody and they're great al rounders.

100% spot on Kev.

I reckon both cars when modified properly would still be a good match, as TBH the 306 is just as hard as the 2k to get big power out of.

I'm seriously saving to supercharge mine next year, the Lynx high boost ones are doing 380 - 430 bhp at the moment, only downside is cost. About £5-6k at the mo....

Even the "low" boost supercharged boys are at 280bhp on standard internals, and they go like a stabbed rat. Thats about £3.5 - 4k

At least ive done the groundwork with mine already, ie suspension, brakes and rads/oil coolers etc etc

low boost second hand, is much cheaper

and 280 is a little over est, but still a good 240-260

and it still drives like a NA, but with torque

I know its not the best car in the world matt as I am a realist ,but I also know which one is going up in value ,and being a ford man since 1984 when I passed my test I have no time for other cars hence only using so called FORD sites

But the thread wasn't titled " what's going to go up in value 306 or rs2k"...

I've owned rs's for the past 11 years.... Rs turbo' cosworths FRS mk1 and FRS mk2.... So don't think for a minute I'm not a ford fan mate....I currently have in the garage a 3dr and another mk1 FRS..... I'm not scared to step out of the blue circle and admit if a cars better whether it be on a ford forum or not.... I love the rs2k but for me I'd take the 306... Don't wish to offend you or the forum but that's how it is mate.

Sorry chap, your logic is flawed. I've seen diesel 306s that look just like the GTI-6, neither stand out hugely from the cooking models, so that's pretty irrelevant really isn't it

I love fords too.

But there are loads of other fun cars out there.

You are limiting your enjoyment in life buy being so blinkered to one marque in my opinion and experience.

Like many others on here I'm a Ford fan at heart. My late Dad used to race mk1 Escorts and mostly had Ford road cars but the question was "which is better?" thankfully most people have given an honest answer, past and present RS2k owners like me included. I may give stupid answers to certain posts on here but I wouldn't dream of knowingly giving out wrong/blinkered advice, especially when it could involve somebody's money.
