don't know about the st24 and 200 but a friend of mine had a st220 and discovered he couldn't use it for towing as it wasn't approved by ford but aparently the sttdci is and all other mondeos are.
tbh it still confuses me even now.
think the vin plate shows towing capacity doesn't it?

There was another thread on here a few months back about this mate. Don't know the final outcome but I can remember years ago reading about an ST estate that had this problem and think somebody else mentioned that on the other thread (autocar iirc) not sure of hatch though.

for some reason type approvals dont always cover the whole range in that model and that means if they havent tested that specific model it wont have approval. It could have 100% identical chassis but it wont be legal.
dumbfuck but true in some cases.
another example is the puma cant tow even though its a fiesta floorpan, stronger shell, better brakes, more powerful engine etc all because it wasnt approved for it.

It may well do but it is all about the GTW (gross train weight) of the vehicle you are using to tow with and who pulls you over, we have had a prohibition notice served on us before using a swb transit 90 pulling a trailer with a car on for being overweight but drove past many police cars/vosa etc for years and never had a problem before then. If you really look into it the towing & trailer laws are quite strict and a massive percentage of cars & vans you see towing trailers are doing it illegally.

oh and then there are the anomalies between your actual vehicle wieght and its rated towing weights etc.
some vehicle combos fall well under the 3.5 tonne limit but you may not be able to drive it as the vehicle MAM is over 3.5 ton. MAM is often more important than the actual mass of the object your towing.
Also difference between pre and post 97 licenses.

The simple reason ford didn't get the st towing stuff done was that they had to cut a small notch out of the rear bumper undertray for the tow bar to poke out of, all te other cars don't have this rear tray so it's all good oher than the estates which have longer bumpers and need the support
Also, the st range has an unscrewable rear tray but due to the design, without it the bumper would say really badly so you can simply unscrew it, cut the slot and screw it back in again
The only other potential issue is that the st's had a box on either side which makes fitting the townbar brackets twice as long as you have to remove the exhaust and beat sheiks to get to the holes in the chassis rail the securing bolts go through, so it's all a matter of saving time as to why they weren't spec'd to tow
I've got the full st kit on mine and it all fits perfectly without any hassles so go for it

In reference to the ST220, it is purely down to type approval. The car is perfectly capable of towing as much as the rest of the Mondeo range but isn't approved to do so. If you want an ST and want to tow, you'd need the STTDCI.

daz was correct
but the kit is universal and there haven't been any problems with the countless folks who have them bolted to their cars
as the flagship model it was never approved due to the paperwork, nothing more nothing less
