Lee,

Look at the french "Green Cotton" range. They have a vast range of air filters. Most of their filters are rated by BHP.......i.e. the correct minimum size of air filter required for the amount of power that your engine produces...

Lee- On Cossies the "GpA" cone filter setups usually use a ally trumpet that fits onto a HUUUGE cone filter.

The trumpet can be cut to whatever size you fancy really, a 4" neck welded on wouldnt cost more than a few quid.

Lucky for you i have 2 of these filters sitting here right next to me that are both going on my car...

the K+N part number is 16740-1, they retail at about 100quid each and are HUUUGE. The actual neck is 6inch (as i also have a ruler here, lol).
They rated at 700bhp each IIRC.

The alloy trumpet costs about 20quid i think.
Ive cut my trumpets to 3" each as they are both joining to one 4" pipe for my inlet.

steve why 2 filters instead of 1 on a big single? i always wondered

only i can think of is letting in more air but is that really that different then a single big filter? (as the compressor housing is full when full)

Rene, if you read up the sizes/specs on the Green Filter web site, notice that the sizes of filters required to produce big BHP's. It becomes clear that most modified cars are (or could well be) "under filtered".......In other words they would benifit from MORE filtered air then the filter installed can provide.

Cause there is NO single filter thats big enough, simple as.

Thats part of the reason you see all these big power jap cars with METAL filter to turbo pipes, the filters aint big enough, they restrictive, and if the hose was silicone the turbo would suck the pipe shut.

Thats also why you see most big power cars at the drag strip running NO filters, as the ones they run on the road are horribly restrictive at big power.

But im running 2x GrpA K+Ns which wont be remotley restrictive till well over 1000bhp.

Hardest thing is fitting them both, they HUGE. Carbon Cannister, Washer Bottle, PAS tank, etc all have to be moved/removed, and then we can just about fit the filters in, but still not sure how to fit the turbo-intercooler pipe as the turbo outlet pipe is 3"

Ah, there you go, Doug beat me to it

I try explaining that to the "more money than sence chequebook tuner" jap lot but they dont get/belive it...

Ive seen proof too, largest blitz filter available (metal thing, big, the same thing them quickshift metal ones are ripoffs of, and just as horrendous at filtering...), a 600bhp+ cossie, and a std silicone inlet, come on big boost and the hose is sucked shut and the car stalls.
Put a GrpA K+N on it and it was fine...

leecavturbo, Just be prepared for the fact that a huge filter may have to be installed within the bumper if there is not enough space in the engine bay.

If mounting in the bumper, get it as high up as possible, and near a place where there is good airflow...The danger is that in heayy/torrential rain it could suck up a lot of water (and maybe hydraulic lock the engine)........For me the solution is to run low boost setting if there is a lot of standing water around.

good tips guys
yeah a 4" samco is probably quite easy to squeeze closed when you think about it , and massive differential pressure due to undersized filter will create a bigger vacuum and suck it closed .
ummum puts thinking cap on ,,,,,,, ordering a 4" aluminum pipe me thinks

Doug- Your "low mount" plan might work for me too actually, there enough room for a big pipe to go down to the front passenger side, and possibly enough room down there for both filters...

Good thinking batman

Lee- Like you said, its the pressure differential, and that will deffo be holding the car/turbo back, so try your damndest to get the biggest mo fo filter possible so theres no restriction. How much power you hoping for? The GrpA K+Ns dont suck in the silicone hose even on 500+bhp cars so they pretty handy.

Big ones will go in the engine bay with a bit of work, The inner wing is cut away for cold air input & with bonnet down sucks air from bonnet grille & is insulated from engine heat. Seems to work,

Rated at 700bhp+

.
Good luck Steve, as it's well worth the effort IMO
The difference was quite dramatic on boost (when compared to the K & N cone filter that was in the engine bay before)........

Lee- The filter Rod uses is BIGGER than the GrpA K+N one, but like i said, the "GrpA" K+N job was proven to work fine on the 600bhp+ Saff racer i was on about, it was the Blitz one thats no good.

Either K+N is good enough for your car mate, IMO your better off NOT using a metal pipe as at least with the Samco its TELLING you when your filter aint good enough

Doug- Dramatic Difference eh? Sounds good to me

I have a gt2540 r on my car. I have used an ITG filter with 100mm inlet, bolts straight on. Buy direct at about Ł70. You will need to find website.

Lee, have you had the head modified on your car yet?

With a decent amount of headwork you should be just SOOOOO far past 400bhp on the spec you have.

Chip
p.s
Any chance of you taking some photos of those two manifolds/turbos next to each other for me so i can see how much further forward or how much higher the new one is seeing as you cancelled our valentines day date?

8pot, ive always thought the inlet seemed a bit "over the top" for that spec of turbo.

there's a few different specs in gt25 format , mine being .7 & .86A/R respectivley, quoted as flow for 440bhp is smack in the middle of the compressor map

Chip,

You must share the depth of your wisdom with garrett.

Lee, not sure what spec mine is to be honest. Cant check as it is away at the moment. If it makes anything like 400hp I will be well happy
