Default Ok, Rear Beam (std) Advice...

ok, after some carefull mathematics by our resident expert mr. gearboxman we've worked out that i've got a shonky 7" 3.9 open diff

anyway, to save lots of fuckin about, i'm gonna get the whole rear beam swapped with one off a 2wd saph being broken. so i get the bigger diff etc. i'll be putting my 4x4 rear brakes on too.

so, whats worth doing "whilst it's out"

braided brake lines are deffo on the agenda, as you gotta fuk about with all that anyway... but i'm thinking more along the line of bushes etc. i wanna make sure everything's tip top so figure polybushing the rear end is worth doing. also what about the decamber shimns, worth ddoing this too i assume (i already got em on my current beam)

now, i rememebr a few topics about how on cossies, one of the bushes at the back is better in STD form than poly form, some sort of rose jointed one? anyone know what one this is?

now, whilst the brakes are off i've been thinking about using the 315 spacer conversion mikeR sells... however i'll then have big rear discs and tiny front discs... lol (i got 4x4 cos fronts) so are there any cheap n cheerfull upgrades on the front? maybe just a similar spacer conversion with 300ish mm discs? i'll be running on esccos wheels and 2wd 2.0GLSi offset.

also anyone know what ratio the 2wd diff is?

IIRC, the cossie ratio is 3.62?

To be honest, this is what I would do.

2wd rear beam with new STANDARD Ford trailing arm bushes. Polybushed beam mount, and polybushed ARB mount.

4x4 rear calipers with new discs, and a decent pad, and spend any money on the brakes at the front.

There was a little post about this a few days ago, but basically, bottom line is that those trailing arm bushes are spherical bearings and not bushes.

i.e. they are not a rubber bush with a metal insert.

Jim,
I'm not sure if the 300mm rear disc kit will fit under the Escort wheels. It "may", I'm just not sure.... As PON says don't change the rear trailing arm bushes (four of them) for poly ones. The OE ones are Ł40 EACH and DO need replacing around every 100k...

The biggest you can get on the front using the 4x4 calipers on the Escort wheel is 310mm. However, this kit is designed for the 4x4 hub, so would have to be specially fabricated for your car (different bells / brackets), so a right pain in the arse .

Jim,

My advice for the front brakes.

get a pair of 2wd cossie front hubs
a pair of 2wd cossie calipers
a big disc kit.

i can sell you the hubs.

switch is breaking his cossie, so the rear beam is being sourced from that. i'm contemplating seeing if he's got the hubs/brakes/ARB aswell.

currently i've got std 2wd 2.0GLSI front stuff with 4x4 cossie brakes (dunno how, it was like that when i bought it... lol!)

anything else i need from the front?
