I have a 7d and it's superb i use it in conjunction with a couple of other cameras so i don't have to keep lens swapping as i'm lazy and sometimes it just takes too long and you miss that special shot.

My kit at the moment..

Cameras:
Canon EOS-7D
Canon EOS-20D
Canon EOS-30D
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5
Lenses:
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Mamiya 135.2L
Mamiya 55mm f/1.4
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro for Canon
Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 AF APO DG OS HSM for Canon
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro for Canon
Sigma 28mm f/1.8 EX Aspherical DG DF Macro for Canon
Tokina AF 11-16mm f/2.8 116 AT-X Pro DX for Canon

Been a while since i did anything useful with any of them though ..

Oh i forgot, i have an EOS 5d film camera as well, proper thing that is!

I have the 400d as well. lovely camera, does everything i need. Unless your going into it properly and selling photos, no need to go for these high spec bodys. Anything over about 6meg pixel is a waist to any photographer just doing it for fun.

Its all down to what glass you put on the body. the better the glass, the better the photo. You put a cheap lens on a top body, its totaly pointless. its like having a cosworth with a 1ltr engine. pointless.

IMO stick with the 400d and get yourself a nice `L` series glass or a nice sigma lens bolted on and then see what you think.

im currently saving for either a canon 70-200 F4 L or sigma 70-200 f2.8 lens. i want a nice portrait lens for some of the photoraphy i do. i also got a nice 400mm sigma prime lens to for my nature and airshow photography.

For good video, buy a video recorder IMO mate.
You can buy a wicked HD Panasonic for about Ł200 that sits right in your pocket.

it's more for the one box does all feature that I want it for rather than lugging around a big bag full of lenses batteries dslr cameras video cameras ipods i phones i pads etc etc and look like a pratt, only to find the battery is flat on the video recorder .Then we will need another bag or a foookin suit case for all the batteries and chargers and inverters for the car and all the fookin leads
I want to just grab the dslr and go not spend 8 hours preparing and trying to remember which button does which function on each of the many devices
I am old remember

do canon make a video recorder that uses the same batteries as their dslrs
I appreciate where you are coming from with the pocket size video camera stu but when we are out on our travels our pockets are normally full with all sorts of other shite
Now we could utilise our partners suit cases I mean handbag but they are normally full to bursting and they moan about carrying your telephoto lens in it and I am fooked if i am walking round wearing a handbag

you say that your files take ages to download to your pc at the moment
i have had a 500d 550d and a 60d and the hd video files are massive
a 3 minute video is 705mb and unless you have a decent spec pc they will not even play that well
also the image files will be a lot bigger as well
i would recommend a 50d or 60d if you upgrade the body as you say you only use the 400d on auto, a 7d as good as they are would be overkill

typically light wise is out of my control, so what ever the weather is on the day
the subject matter is a gain what ever I see
so I am being very specific lol
ideally a good quality general lens will probably be best for me as I tend to point and squirt
not really into macro shots more portrait and landscape I would say

these are the lens I already own from a former life
copied from a previous post

ef 28mm 1:2.8
ef 35-80mm 1:4-5.6
ef 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 these were all bought by my loving wife for me at the time with my money roflol
ef-s 18-55 1:3.5-5.6 which came with the 400d which is the one I use 99.99% of the time

I'd sooner pay more for a better lens than buy one for now then end up having to buy a better one next year

Ok, you have at least suggested it will be in:
  • Daylight
  • Quite close
  • From a distance
  • Landscapes
  • Portraits
So you need a good L series zoom that works well in daylight. That was my first choice too when I bought my first l last year, and this was it...

Sorry mate you edited after i started to reply.

Ref the "ef-s 18-55 1:3.5-5.6"

This is the stock lens that comes with the camera usually.
Do you ever find you cant get close enough with that one? The reason I ask is its focal length is less than the one I suggested and for good reason.

I have 2 that I carry everywhere:

The Canon 17-55 F2.8 IS
The Canon 70 - 200mm F4 USM L.

As those two work well as a pair, one for closer work, then a quick change to the later lens.
If its a wedding / christening etc then its ALWAYS the 70-200 is its ultrasonic motor is so damned quiet, its near silent, and its uber fast, it NEVER fails to focus properly and instantly.

The IS will allow you to use the zoom at long focal lengths and gain you a few stops. It really depends what your going to use it for mate. The canion Image Stabilisation is very good indeed of course, but its also a LOT more money. You wont really know until you find your shutter speed really is too low for the conditions you need and the type of shot you wsh to achieve.

That said, if you tend to use it on Auto and dont care much for depth of fiedl etc and just want memories instead of creativity, I would suspect that your camera is going to look after you anyway mate.

Hmm, the 17-55 is not being sold ever, its exceptional. However, I really have to sell my "Canon 70 - 300mm F4-5.6 IS ISM" as well as my 70-200 F4 L to make it sensble to upgrade to the F2.8 70-200 L IS as that lens will work with both my extenders perfectly, rendering the above lenses redundant in my collection.

from what you've said about leaving it in auto, i wouldn't bother spending money on lenses to not get the best from them. you can take an average picture with an average camera/lens. "all the gear, no idea" comes to mind.
