Default Octavia VRS

Is this a modern-day replacement for the Sierra Cosworth?

I didn't think it was as powerful?

No, in it's day the sierra cosworth was a super car beater, the octavia vrs is an excellent all round car and plenty fast enough for most on the roads of today but you can't compare the 2.

Hardly, the Cossy was a rear wheel drive hooligan out of the box, the Skoda is a quick front wheel drive car that can be made to go relatively quick.

VRS is no slouch but nothing like the cossie, -> cosworth engineering makes it special, and the aftermarket potential continue the legend, that just isn't there with the octavia VRS

Yeah no aftermarket tuning potential... that's why a new 'tuned' vrs has been taken to the salt flats to break 200 mph

with enough money any car can do that ... I don't see the VAG engine ever having the cache of cosworth though.

I disagree.

Those 20v turbo engines can make loads of power. 350-400 is possible without pulling them apart, much like a cossie.

Being fwd over rwd... Well thats just a sign of the times I guess...

So not a hooligan sideways machine like a cossie, but a definite gentlemans express....with the potential to make much more than factory power!

Nice Cars, Really Like Them, Look The Part, Go Well, Practicle, Reliable, Id Have One, Infact, I nearly Bought One A Few Years Back, But Not Compareable To A Cossie IMHO, Unless You Compare Them As A Car, With A Turbo, Then You Can Even Compare A Nissan Figaro To A Cossie. I Cant See Anyone Paying Ł4K+ For A Ropey Old VRS In 20 Years Time, Because Thats What You Would Pay For A Very Rough Saff These Days.

It's risky running them over 300 without rods

You couldnt compare the two, however the mk2 Octavia VRS is an awesome car for the money - the VAG 2.0TFSI is a peach of an engine, superb build quality and easily tunable and considering you could pick one of these up for 4k+ they are an absolute steal - a comparable mk5 GTi is thousands more.

Who cares about that meaningless constraint? If it can go faster over a longer distance then great, I don't see manufacturers saying top speed is xxx mph ( within 1.5 miles) lol

It'll probably be able to be held at full throttle in top gear for longer than 1.5 miles anyway

Top speed is top speed , not top speed in a distance

For what it's worth, standard for standard an octy 2 vrs is a much better all round car than the saph, but then it would be being twenty years newer. The tfsi is a peach

i have both although my vrs is the early type, saph doesnt come close on ride quality and build quality but the saph(only stage 1) would waste the octy in performance but thats quite obvious. Two completely different cars, love em both in different ways but the vrs in my eyes will never be a a cossy replacement....both cracking cars in completey different ways

Do you reckon the mk1 and mk2 escort boys thought
that the sapphire was a grandads machine when it was launched?!

Yes but back then, turbos and fuel injection were still voodoo technology to many, so I bet it had its doubters!

I wouldn't say the vRS is a modern Cosworth. A great car, but not "stand out" enough in terms of it's performance compared to other cars of its type. The Sierra Cosworth was a very quick car compared to other fast, cheapish saloons. The Skoda is sort of on par.

The Skoda is a great car, way better than the Cosworth in so many ways, but it should be with all those years of car development in between them.

As for those saying it can't be because it's FWD; change the bloody record, it's such a boring bloody arguement
