Yep, i know these threads must get a bit boring but with so much car knowledge on here its a good place to start!
Basically im looking for something reliable, comfortable, with a bit of poke, decent ish looking, for about a grand. I might also be doing a few longish motorway journeys in it for work so nothing slammed on its arse or with a bucket for an exhaust!
I was thinking a 2.0 Focus or something. Any better ideas?

Tricky that. There used to be loads of cool cars out there for that money, but they're all too old/too expensive now!
Focus is ok, but I don't find them to be that comfortable on long journeys to be honest. I'd sooner go for a Mondeo. Should get a 2.0 petrol MK3 for that now I would think. Perhaps not as exciting, but a lot nicer car all round I think.
It's a tricky budget these days I think. I shall spend 10 minutes on ebay and get back to you

Haha, cheers mate
Ive been doing the same!! As you say not a great deal about for that kind of money really. I dont really want a barge either so something like an Omega, although a cracking car, isnt really the sort of thing im after.
I could save up for a while but i kind need something soonish as my Escort has started playing up. Plus im going to be visiting customers soon in my job so dont really wanna rock up in a 14 year old slammed Escort!! :/

I've got a Mk3 2.0 Mondeo runabout and it's a good car. Girlfriend's dad works abroad so he gave me the car for free with 95,000 miles on it. It now has 110,000 miles on it and the only thing I've had to replace is a rear wheel bearing which was whirring.
Comfortable, goes when it needs to and I average 36mpg combined

Thanks for the help everyone, its much appreciated. Some good card out there for around a grand I reckon still, just got to look a bit harder that's all! Speaking to someone about an 04 laguna thats JUST out of budget, seeing if I can talk him round to my way is thinking!
Not the prettiest car on the world for sure but a hell of a lot of car for a bag of sand (ish)!

To be honest, I'd try and buy as plain a car as possible at that budget and for that sort of use.. last thing you want is to get something which requires a shitload of maintenance/money spent on it, or something which you won't be fully confident will start and travel around day in, day out.
The newer Lagunas came with a card and start button didn't they?? That'd count it out immediately for me, too many electrics (specially in something french) could be a big issue just waiting to ruin your day...
The Mondeo is probably the best shout since they look ok, go ok, handle ok, reliable enough (specially petrols) and don't cost much to fix if it needs it.
Cheers,
Grant

I'd be dubious of that shape Laguna. I reckon with a bit of looking about, you'd get a decent MK3 Mondeo 2.0, maybe even a Ghia X, which has plenty of toys on. Reliable, cheap to look after generally, can't go wrong really!

Ford Scorpio MK I Cosworth. Reliable as fuck, comfie and wicked interior space. My personal experiences with this car.
And with manual transmission an excellent limo for journeys etc.
Alfa Romeo 164 3.0. Even though for FWD a nice car too.
So many great cars out there.
