I have a 2005 BMW X5 3.0d sport, the TV/monitor changed its display two days ago, it has gone to a much more basic looking screen and the GPS option isnt there any more? The GPS in the boot still has the red light on and I have disconnected the battery for 1/2 hour and re-attatched. Nothings changed...I did notice that the right hand knob had a little red fan symbol on beside it.

Any ideas BMW gurus?

right the little red fan symbol turns out to be the aux heater control light that sits beside the computer control knob.

Mine did that and went too a white screen when i removed sat nav unit too send for repair !! Check plug in boot or units fooked i recon , cost me over a ton for repair !!! Hope its a loose plug mate

Right I had a wiggle about with the plug and nothing happened.

I did try and set the Aux heating and it started flashing the GPS coordinates at me! It knew where we were so the GPS unit looks like it might still be working, just the display has gone to a really basic setting?!?!
