Default Dual Mass flywheel

Can a dual mass flywheel fault cause a starting problem?

Car is a 2004 focus TDCi. It always struggles to start properly, theres plenty of juice in the battery, and I have replaced the glow plugs recently. I know when the car was 2 years old it went back to ford for a new DMF under warrenty, abnd you can feel a distinct vibration through the brake pedal.

The reason I ask if this could cause problems, as it seems when you crank the car it stutters, unlike a glow plug problem when it would just turn over until it fires, it seems like this is firing all wrong for the first few seconds, and then it comes to life. Could this be a problem with the cam and crank sensors not syncronising properly? I adjusted the crank sensor to no affect but did notice a couple of scuffs on the end of the pick up?

This problem is driving my folks nuts, and they are considering getting rid, if it is a DMF anf that needs replacing then that might be the nail in its coffin, shame as it’s a really nice car to drive.

Anyone seen these problems before?

(no offence) the delphi system is shit, it is known in the trade as the shittest of the common rail systems as im sure you know. the pump may be failing, or the injectors may be failing and spilling off big time.

very common problem starting issues on the 1.8tdci focus. can be a number of issues including wrong batter (needs to be calcium) fucked cam and crank sensors, fucked dmf and fucked starter. usually with the starter they get jamed with crap from the dmf (even if the dmf still works ok) and then start drawing too much current.

can be a bastard to find the fault though!!

if the starter has never been replaced but the dmf has i'd be taking the starter out to inspect. sometimes you can clean them up a bit as a short term solution.

There's a known thing that the teeth break or crack on the dual mass fly wheels. Apparently over time it damages the starter n gives the symptoms your on about. Don't quote me tho.
