Default How to get better mpg

Afternoon all

Just looking for anyway to make my petrol mk1 focus 1.8 abit more economical. Thinking more along mechanical lines rather than driving style. Currently get about 29-30 day to day managed 37 apparently from rotherham to Chester and back the other month but normally about 300miles to a tank. Soooo any ideas peeps.

Service the car

check tyre pressures for starters

Dont carry a boot full of shite thats not needed

Driving style has a lot to do with it tho

Sit at 60 rather than 70/80 and change gear at 2-3k revs rather than higher

I used to have one and consistently get 450 motorway miles from the tank (I used to get 3 trips from home to base at 150 miles).

60mph on the motorway, change gear under 3000rpm and look for situations happening so you don't have to slow down then accelerate.

300 miles suprises me as I get 350 miles around town from a 2 litre Mondeo.

Lowered springs help a bit and pump the tyres up a bit harder

That's not great mpg, my dads 2L ghia AUTO does an average of 37mpg, but it's just on shortish trips of between 20-30 miles, easily betters 350 to a tank even doing all short stuff, but only got 60,000 ish on the engine I built for it.

Low rolling resistance tyres.

Remove all excess weight, tools etc from the car.

Remove anything that creates drag (roof racks).

Accelerate gently and avoid high speeds.

Plan your trip outside of bad traffic hours.

Don't use air con.

Use low viscosity oil.

Run small diameter wheels.
