Make sure the aluminium is 6 or 7000 series, anything else is not strong enough

Do the numbers mean tensile strength?

No, Aluminium alloy's are designated number's depending on alloy and strenght. 6000 series is very strong, but 7000 is stronger, but difficult to machine and suffers from corrosion more than 6000. 6061 or 6068 is what we use for situations like brake calipers. Google wiki or something, as I could be typeing here all day.

I actually work in an aluminium extrusion factory as a quality engineer.
Part of my role is tensile testing the aluminium we make.

If you can get a 6081/6082 you will be fine. If you can get someone to use a portable hardness tester on the material you have. If you can get an engineering company to use this and get the brunell results I can give you a rough indication of what alloy it is

I've got 6081 so should be cool. Machining it sawed speak, machines really easily just doesn't seem to give of a great finish.

I've left it nice and thick and made the hub mounts through holes to use a nut and bolt so should be plenty strong.
