Disk Defragmenter
How long they usually take?
Ive NEVER bothered to do it before (tho HD is about 5years old) and it takes an age, like fookin days Prob been on for about 12hrs on and off (thankfully it pretty much carries on from where it left off last time) and its still not 50% thru
Is there any point to it anyhow? Does it free up any HD space? I could do with that...

Steve imagine you have a CD collection with say 5000 in total. All in alphabetical order. You then spend 5 years playing them and never put them back in the correct place! As time goes on it becomes increasingly difficult to find the title you are looking for and how long do you think it would take you to sort it! A defrag does just that with your computers files etc..........

Probably will take a fair while if u havent done it before. After youve done it once it should speed up considerably as first time round the HD will be very fragmented. As the name suggests it defragments the HD, therefore sorting the files on the HD in order to make it run more efficiently/quickly. Also worth doing a "Disk Cleanup" if you surf the net alot as this gets rid of alot of temporary files that arent really needed increasing free space on ur HD and again making it more efficient. Hopefully thats about the size of it. I stand to be corrected.

Every 15mins or so it says its restarting due to activity on the HD, but ive fookin shut down everything barring stuff that makes the PC crash when i do it
That dont seem to significantly slow it down anyohw as pretty much restarts where it left off.
Whats the minimum amount (and what are they) of progs that need to be showing in the close program window for windows to keep operating?

Steve I didn't do mine for 2 years (and I use the computer a lot!!!)
At first the hard drive overheated after about an hour of defragmenting it was that bad, now have a hard drive cooler (looks like one of them gay anodised halfords oil filter coolers ) and it took about 5 hours or something stupid like that. Computer was like new after though - it is well worth it! Makes it proper quick. Now run it every week to keep on top of it!
