omega, vectra b,passat, octavia seem better made than a golf but both of them and you won't go wrong with a avensis diesel.
watch out for clocking and ex taxis that are worn out but any of the above will provide comfort and reliability and economy if they have been looked after previously, any alfa diesels or mondeo mk3's or nissan primeras can ruin you financially if they go wrong dude

i've got a 2007 astra van 1.3 turbo diesel and its great on fuel, i paid £2300 for it too as it was ex rental. (i had to stick a clutch in it but other than that its been perfect) 97k on the clock.

i get over 500 miles off 50 quids worth of diesel, and thats 70% town, 30% motorway driving.

i've got a 307 diesel estate, bought it from my company for £300 with a fucked engine, although it was only a turbo, fitted for £800 and return near on 700 miles per tank. Shame its soo boring to drive but have the ducati and kit car to make up for it!

I had a 306 and it was great, mine wasn't a HDi though, just a 1.9 diesel. I'd have another too as it was great on fuel and just took abuse.

vw diesel for the win, i bought a 1.9tdi sport bora for 2.5k on an 03 plate last year, 130bhp standard and averages 48mpg, i did have it remapped to 170bhp four days after collecting it and mpg hasn't really changed unless you floor it of course.
comfortable and a pleasure to drive.
try a passat they go for less

Escort TD if you can find one that isn't rotten. I used to do 30k miles a year and they are really bulletproof mechanically, the body always goes before the engine. But you can pick them up for peanuts and repairs are cheap as chips.

Just watch the belt tensioners, unless its recipted.I got lucky on my 1.8d van that it was only the pump belt that went but I sold another and told and told the guy to get the belt done which he didn`t and it went about 9months later.

the old pug/citroen 1.9td are pretty much bullet proof and return a good 45mpg under most driving, also parts are very cheap they also have none of the expensive issues of the newer diesels, obviously not as fast or as nice to drive as the newer dervs but if you just need a A to B donkey they are perfect

How much you give for that?? A Superb TDi would be an awesome and comfy daily drive.

OP, if mega miles put you off cars then how about an Octavia TDi... pretty sure you could get something reasonable mileage and reasonable spec for your budget.

Cheers,
Grant

Going to look at a M reg 306 diesel tomorrow. used to be a turbo but has had a citroen non turbo engine fitted, no tax or mot though , but is 2 mins down the road for £280, will have a look round it and let you know weather its worth a punt, my mates a tester so unless its a proper deathtrap ticket wont be an issue and costs £40, then its tax which for 6 months is £60.... so it will owe me £380 all in, even heard a few of you lot saying they run well on chip fat diesel

As long as it has a Bosch pump, which I suspect it will. It'll run on nearly anything you stick in the tank
