Default Can i tax a car with temporary insurance?

As above,

I want to get the RST run in, but will need to tax it first. I don't want to take out a policy yet so was planning on adding it as a temp vehicle to my other policy. But can i tax it?

Cheers all

Rob,

should be able to so long as you have a cover note with your name and the car reg on, alternitively if you know anyone with a traders policy ask them to do it using the new keeper suppliment

Ive seen someone walk into a Post Office with a insurance document, which was a few days out of date and the person behind the counter still gave a Tax disk as they felt sorry for him. They told him he should phone the company up and get it sorted as he was not insured.

What actually happened is the person was selling the car and wanted it taxed to appeal to more buyers.

It should do as it's still insured be it temp or otherwise provided the vehicle is listed on the certificate, it's akin to people who insure monthly as they could tax the car and then not pay thereafter if wanting to! The example above this was wrong, this is the very reason they ask for proof of insurance, any idiot could tell them the insurance has lapsed with in reality they probably don't have insurance nor intend doing so, although in that case it was most likely genuine you can't have one rule for one!

How is this affected by the recent change in the law whereby cars that are taxed HAVE to have insurance as well otherwise the DVLA (or whichever meddling authority is policing it) issues an automatic fine.

So you take out temporary insurance, tax the car, then get fined because it's taxed but not insured and the 'authorities' automatically deem that you are driving the car on the road without insurance.

You could tax it online also so long as the car is registered on the MIB database and you are teh registered keeper

Just found this on a temp insurance site ?

http://www.finance-1.co.uk/tax-car-w...insurance.html

Also found this on another site although having checked the cover I had it didn't entitle me to tax the car had I needed to ?

Road Tax

Q. Can I get road tax with a cover note ?

A. With effect from 30th April 2010, the DVLA and UK Post Offices are now accepting insurance certificates down loaded from the internet for road fund licence purposes. Last updated 7.5.2010
