recent aussie law change, will it be coming here
anyone bought a C, D, F or X catagary write off, well a recent australian law change has stopped them being put back on the road, unless they are inspected by an approved authority, even if it's very light damage like hail stones, a key up the paintwork or minor vandalism/paint stripper, i think this law in Australia is a step too far

The bigger problem with cat c & d cars is them being wrongly classified!
Just bought a 56 reg corsa, it needs a wing, bonnet, headlight, radiator and a bumper. All bolt on parts, no chassis damage and the air bags are fine. It's been classed as a cat c! The car it's replacing is also a cat c and that more or less identical damage.
Chatting to the bloke when we got it vic tested he said lots of cars are coming through as cat c's because the insurer's haven't got a clue what they are doing!
Gavin.

i agree that written off vehicles should have to be inspected if they have had anything more than panel damage, if the shell is twisted, ie been rolled it shouldn't be repaired, the shell must be crusted, but the insurance assessors seems to lump everything in to the wrong category, most high value vehicles regardless of damage seems to go in catergory D, they dont want to loose too much money by putting it in cat C do they,
and a few years ago 2006 - 07, every rover that had an accident, i know they are rubbish, was cat C even if all it needed was a bumper, or had been keyed and just needed some paint, but you could have just left it
it would be more sensible to vic check all vehicles written off over a pre-accident value of £5000, that way back street repairs would find it more difficult to pass on high value accident damaged vehicles as straight

many people don't realise that companies running large fleets, don't contact there insurance companies about every accident/claim, they sell them to salvage companies, who then resale them as "third party claim" "not on hpi register" so just because its hpi clear doesnt mean its not "accident free"

the government already has plans afoot to catch out damaged vehicles and thats the planned extra checks they want to try and do at MoT time. Its the same checks that will mean a lot of modified cars will end up with a IVA test due to modifications.
It means that pretty much all cossie conversions may end up doing IVA at some time when its picked up at MoT unless they have previously been inspected by DVLA.
exactly. you can present a pancaked crushed car to the VIC check and as long as they can see the vin numbers etc then they will have to issue a V5.

Its a crap rule they dont do a yearly mot so why bother with this theres kids in high powered v8s driving around with bald tyres so there like slicks they can drive on these for as long as they want untill the poluce pull themnfor something.
I cant see how paint stripper will justify a check tbh

ours get checked every year and with that i mean a 1hr inspection of ALL components including emissions etc etc by the police inspectors, no private parties.
its a bit excessive but then again keeps the children tuning cars off the road for good.

did anyone watch the chopshop on tv, where they build modified cars, one that i can remember was a fiesta xr2i they fitted a mondeo 2.0 zetec engine and box, they only managed this by altering the front chassis legs and a few other things, i thought the car was bloody dangerous, it couldnt have been legal, as they managed to fit the rear hatch from the mondeo too, gawd know what would have happened in an major accident,
a bit like those muppets on topgear when they built stretched limo's, i remember james may having a double fronted limo, what was it saab and alfa front ends welded together, they never mentioned that it would need to be checked by vosa or whoever, or it would not pass an mot, the BBC glorifying the dangerous world of cut and shut

This has become more prevelent in the last 12 months due to significant hail storms experienced not only in VIC but NSW too. Many vehicles were written off due to the extensive panel damage. This was compounded with too few workshops to repair and a backlog of many weeks to get cars back on the road. Consequently those buying written off vehicles and in the repair trade, could quite feasibly put them back on the road with repaired panels cheaply. Flood damage and write offs has been very high already this year also so to get in quickly before they start appearing on the market, this makes a lot sense.
