hi i have a frs that when started from cold (left over night) mis fires on start up and lasts for about a minute. it also revs high and trys to dye as soon as its starts. anyone know what could be causeing this? its started happening about 3 months ago and is getting worse and happing every time now.

try the air sensor on the throttle elbow

try the non return valve on the back of the head,usually the hose splits and causes this prob,also could be the white blanking plug on the back

the non return goes to the breather and the white plug is under the vapour assy

Does it misfire when you drive it.If so it could be coil pack pug leads n spark plugs.

hi thanks for the replys, i have had a look with everything in place and cannot see anything split/ twisted. what could be wrong with the white blanking plug? will i be able to see with it still on?

also it doesnt mis when driving that i have noticed

Could be lambda sensors mines a 1.8 and did roughly what you described would try to die on cold start and hunt badly coughing and misfiring and then would sort itself out. If it is fine when warm could be an idea just to get a couple of second hand lambdas see if it sorts it. Have you had the EML on recently? Car relies on closed loop fuelling a lot more on cold than warm and on startup. You'd never think lambdas could cause cold start issues but they can.

Might be worth getting coolant system pressure tested.... just as you state only missfire when left overnight... could be head gasket starting to go...coolant gets in cylinders overnight hence the missfire in the morning till the water in dispersed and also would explain the coolant loss...any emulsification of oil (creamy oil cap)

nope nothing like that ive recently had head gasket done so hopfuly not.

ive just had a proper look and there is no blanking plug there at all. ive held my finger over it and it didnt feel like it was sucking or anything? will this be my problem?

You need to feel the bottom of the black pipe with the White valve in it. It's the crankcase breather and the bottom just wears through where oil has sat in the pipe.

where you have the boost take off the top arrow goes to the fuel vapor assy. is this correct??

why is it using coolant? no car should use coolant, that is very wrong.

no sorry is not using coolant for some reason i thought he ment anti freeze

i have cheacked all pipes and there is no splits twists or kinks, the white blanking plug shown in the pic isnt on mone i just have a black bitsticking out that is solid with no holes.

i dont know what else to do no so if anyone has anymore suggestions them feel free to let me no.

this happens on my rs1800 fiesta and it sounds like above , head gasket not clamped down properly or head slightly warped causing dampness in the bore causing it to miss fire when started from cold. do you have alot of water vapour coming from the back of the car when started from cold? . mine does the exact same in the morning then drive for ten seconds and its fine. just to note as its only using a very small amount of coolant theres no cream under the filler cap.
i know this on mine as the water pump impellor broke when we had all the cold weather and i drove it for 50 odd miles with very little coolant in.

Sounds familiar to my focus turbo (petrol). When started first thing it'll stall straight away but starts up again no bother. It has water coming out the exhaust and I noticed it uses a little coolant. Had it 4 months and will just now need topping up. The car doesn't like heavy boost neither, especially 3rd, 4th and 5th but recently 2nd gear a bit. Breather system was totally clogged up with mustard colored gunk. Cleaned it out yesterday and seems to breathe better but still stutters. This all worth getting head gasket checked?

some came with that mate,if theres no air leaking then its fine.to be honest mate its a process of elimination,ive had issues with mine last couple of days and found out today its the maf,car was idling crap,misfiring and general running poor.if you can borrow parts from anyone local to try.things to check are maf,return hose on inlet with white valve in it,coilpack,air sensor on elbow,icv,tps,the lsit is endless
