Default Buying a shell without ID

I could really do with some proper advice on this please if anyone has had any experience.

Theres a nice shell for sale on ebay but has no id. its been in a lockup for 25+ years aparently so is understandable and on the old fords the vin number was on the strut tops, which are often replaced. I've spoken to the DVLA and they've said if they can't find a vin number on the car i can refer it to the owners club who can provide a certificate of restoration and they'll issue a period reg to it.

Otherwise its going on a Q. What are the chances of this realistically? Basically i'm not buying a shell if theres any real chance of it going to a Q plate. i'm going to be putting too much time, effort and money into it. It finishes tomorrow on ebay so any help is appreciated. its a clean one but its simply too much money to chance.

Cheers.

Joe.

didn't really want to do that though! lol.

plus i'd pay another grand for a mex id. i'd stick it as anything as long as it'd work tbh, 1.1, left hooker! lol etc but i dont want to fuck around too much. i'd rather it be legit for so many reasons.

q plates still alive and kicking strongly.

unless you can source the original vehicles ID in some form then you cannot put this back on the road legally on anything other than a q plate.

the way i see it, if you know it to be stolen its wrong, if you know its not stolen then its just re-cycling

Some years ago a friend of mine bought a Mk4 XR3i. A few months down the line he was tugged by the police and informed it might be stolen, so they impounded it to try and identify it. There was no chassis number in the floor as the front floor section had been replaced. The police couldnt confirm the I.D of it so my mate got it back. It was referred to the DVLA who placed it on an age related plate and it was assigned a new chassis number. Dont know how it works now though.

hi its a very grey area and a lot as changed over the years, i would say if its the right money buy it and you can get a better idea when you start digging into it more. at the end of the day if it had id he would be looking at double the price it is now or even more. i had a 3dr cos shell on a q and i was not sure either but if you ask the right questions to the right people in the right places you will find an id, i was offered an e plate id for £500 or look for a rotten shell sometime along the way, its to solid to turn that down, if it had id and rotten would you buy it then? something will come up other than a q plate, do a resto thread and people will help you on here, classic movie quote IF YOU BILD IT, ID WILL COME lol good luck.

talking of q plates, what happens if you have a 1992 cossie, and you prang it and you write it off, but you've spend a lot of money on it, so you decide to re-shell it using an 1989 cossie shell, does that 92 kreg become a 89 g reg because the shell id says its a 89 shell, or even the other way round, an 89 car becomes a 92 car after the re-shell

Even if it does end up on a Q plate its still a nice Mk1 at the end of the day. If your worried about resale values then we all know cars are worth more in bits anyway........

You can't actually reshell that way anymore. It used to be that you needed both vehicles to have an ID, the replacement shell had to be of the same type as that it was replacing. The vehicle then took the id of the replacement shell. DVLA changed the rules so that you can't officially reshell unless the replacement shell is a new unused shell which requires proof in the form of a receipt from it's origin ie a main dealer. TBH if you have a new shell you wouldn't involve the DVLA, just stamp the shell yourself and keep quiet.

a mk1 is about only one of the few cars that i reckon would actually get away quite nicely on a q....

It could be an 89 car if the 89 has I.D but really it should be a Q as it's built from a mixture of 2 or more cars.
It would need an I.V.A test.

no that 92 car with any previous registerd shell will go on a Q plate

the only way you will keep the plate if you use a new or unregisterd shell

you get me, i hope you get me, get me , good .from fly with me ....lol.

theres another thing out with the old cars ..if the car has been off the road for yrs when you put it back on the road it will have to be checked by dvla anyway

as too many people were using old log books on the old cars
