Man dies as car hits pub
Campaigners are calling for safety measures at a fatal accident blackspot where a 29-year-old driver became the eighth victim early today after a stolen car crashed into a Lees pub.
The bright red, soft-top Ford Escort was crushed into two-thirds of its length and bent like a banana when it hit the corner wall of the Bridge Inn at Leesbrook.
It was the eighth death in the same area of Lees Road in 11 years.
Firemen and paramedics gave cardiac massage and pain relief as they fought to free the driver and his seriously injured 22-year-old passenger.
The driver died early today at the Royal Oldham Hospital where the passenger is being treated for serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.
Crews had to cut off the roof and driver’s side of the Escort, and sub-officer Andrew Turner, of Oldham Fire Station, said: “We had to work very rapidly because the men could not be stabilised in the car.
“Even though it was a soft top all the support pillars were damaged and crushed together.
“It was forced into two-thirds of its original length and bent around the driver’s side. We managed to cut them out in about 15 minutes.”
Police are investigating whether the car had been stolen a short distance away in Salem.
It is then believed to have hit a parked Vauxhall Vectra and box van in Dove Street, before turning on to Lees Road and then clipping the kerb around 11.40 pm last night.
A local motorist who saw the aftermath said: “The car came down the hill and the driver’s side hit the corner of the pub wall and spun 180 degrees into the middle of the road.
“There was debris all over the road and the windscreen had come out. The road was closed for at least two hours.”
This morning, Peter Ashworth, owner of the Bridge Inn, pleaded for speed cameras at the bend as the road curves from Salem into Lees.
He said: “It was 11.45 pm and I was inside. The car hit the far wall and the whole building juddered.
“I looked out of the window and the car had run back on to the road and was against the pavement outside the far end of the pub.
“I came out and I could see two men inside the car but the police were already at the scene dealing with it. I am bitter and annoyed that Lees Road here has become a racetrack.”
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact traffic police on 0161-856 8809 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800-555111.
THE 300-metre stretch of road in Leesbrook now has a shocking death toll of eight lives in only 11 years.
Since 1994 there have been six fatal crashes — the youngest victim aged only 15 — and numerous less serious accidents.
Lees Road, the main route to Uppermill and Greenfield from Oldham, goes down a long straight hill at Leesbrook and then into a left-hand bend.
The tragic catalogue of death and destruction there prompted Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Phil Woolas to last year plead with the police and Oldham Council to take action.
In 1994, 15-year-old Michelle Larkin, of Lowside Drive, Glodwick, and 23-year-old Arif Hussain (22), of Clinton Walk, Glodwick, were killed when the Toyota Tercel they were in ploughed into the Lighthouse pub. A second teenage passenger suffered a broken leg and arm, and driver Parvez Ali (24), of Greenhill Terrace, Glodwick, suffered multiple injuries.
Yards from that spot in January, 2001, 81-year-old Doris Harvey was killed when she was hit by a joyrider in a stolen car.
Later that year, 19-year-old Billy Bevan, of Hollin Hall Street, Clarksfield, died when his car hit the wall at Lees Brook Mill.
In 2002, Mark Andrew Harrison (20), of Carnation Road, Holts, was killed when his Vauxhall Nova GTE hit a pelican crossing.
Then just before Christmas, 2003, the road claimed the lives of 16-year-old schoolfriends Christian Leyden, of Springhead, and Anthony Hughes, of Greenfield.
Anthony’s mother, Kathleen Hughes (57), who was driving at the time, suffered serious internal injuries when her Ford was hit by a Rover 827.
im more gutted about the car to tell you the truth, took us a year to build from a shell .
well, he wont do that again
as it was ...
After thief ...

That's tragic but if you nick someone's car and drive like a twat into a pub it's your own fault...not saying they deserved to die but if you play with fire.....

Feel sorry for your m8, the poor sod who's pub got wrecked and the emergency services that had to clear up.
Dont give a shit about the thief.
If i could guarrantee no false alarms, I'd have a cyanide gas canister rigged up to my alarm - kill all the pikey coonts!
As for the guy who "pleaded for speed cameras" FFS! what difference would that make to a thoughtless prick in a car he just stole??
