When I put my foot on the breaks my head lights come on and only the rear left break light comes on, even does this with the ignition off, on a mk4 escort any ideas?

Bad earth,mk4 disco lights!!!try all the shitty connector pieces as well, they corrode like fuck.
May help to trace it via disconnecting one side of the rear lights then see if the problem comes back, this should help in which circuit maybe causing the issue.

Just went out and took the connecter off the right hand side one that wasn't working, sprayed it with wd 40 and used some sandpaper on the end of a screwdriver cleaned all the little metal contacts put it back together, works fine now thanks :d

No probs mate,it's really common on them.if it keeps happening, you can get some spray electrical grease that should do the trick.
