Default My new TOY! 205 Mi 16v

I've got snet comming up on the 6th of march and decided that my saph would be a little to much to handle on my first track day!

So I started looking for something a little more forgiving, I looked at E36 325's, rst's, I really liked the look of stevie040's Proton Satria GTi and a shit load of stripped out boy racer shite and really couldn't make my mind up.

So I thought about the many cars i've owned and which 1 I had the most driving enjoyment with and it was a Peugeot 309 GTi (even with all the understeer)

then I found this for sale

sorry about IPhone pics but i quickly took these when i picked it up hope to get some better 1's this weekend

The guy i bought it off had spent a fortune on the engine build I haven't looked through all the paper work but I know basicly it's been built to take 9k+ rpms. its been weighed in at 564 kgs and engine was benched at 204 bhp.

I'm real excited about it but lacking a bit off confidence due to the lack of roll cage!

Has any 1 got any surgestions on the roll cage issue and or any advice on the mi 16 engine???

This weekend i hope to get a good service done inc new filter socks as the itg's on it are fooked and a new bushes for the clutch fork as there is slight play.

So what do you lot think of it?

tried finding second hand cages, very few and far between there is a fella possibly breaking a complete car on here but seems every time i say 'i'll have that to a for sale post the seller never responds.

O well just have to nick some scaffolding tube of site or weigh out for a new 1

No way is that weight right though, i'm sure I have seen stripped sprint cars around 800kg. Get a cage in and it will be set to be raped

I got 1.6 as 850kg and 1.9 as 880kg.

They strip well. Get it on a weighbridge, whatever it is, it'll be light!

I hear there are issues with the Mi16 lump, but one for Spikey and the Welsh guys who all have 'em and probably have links to some horrors and some good advice

Unfortunately, yes

I ran one for a year or so, it was superb to start with and very reliable considering I gave it complete death on many track days and it never really gave me any issues. But as you start making it go quicker and quicker through the corners, oil starvation issues quickly follow!

I tried every 'cheap' fix to the problem, but I could never stop the engine spinning shells whenever I took it on track. To be fair though, the car has to be pretty good and well setup, and driven HARD to cause all these problems. It took quite a few track days, plus R888's, 309 beam etc to make the car handle well enough to cause the problems so it might be that you are fine for now...

My own personal opinion is that the only full-proof solution with the MI16 motor is to dry-sump it = £££££

Good luck - cracking cars

Will noise be an issue with it revving to 9k and the inlet system on it. Bet it makes some lovely sounds but will it trip the noise meters?

I tracked mine with slicks and an ATB diff - mine had twin 48's on it as well... and ran a karl norris baffled sump - Karl loves these engines as much as the Cossie YB. I never had a prob but they do go bang quickly if they're not right.

Cage - OMP is the one to go for but as these cars tend to be sold as one and not really broken they don't come up often 2nd hand.

Make sure you do the 206/406 brake mod and you'll be a happy bunny.

PS - the weight seems well off - mine had perspex windows etc and was never that low.

sorry to say, but i can confirm, after looking at those pics, there is ZERO chance that weight is correct

last summer mine weighed 810kg's and thats with heaters, C5 wheels (4.7kg each), fibre glass bonnet and boot, fook all left on doors, holes cut out everywhere, brackets unused cut off

so there is no way that car is 250jg's lighter than mine

i would welcome you to the world or reliabilty and track, but you have an Mi16 engine

also just seen, 204bhp? thats 50bhp up from std, and those socks with will be sapping power.

so sadly again, i just cant see it making 204bhp

it would need hi comp big flowed head, nice exhaust,

do you have a build for the engine?

i suspect it's a std engine with carb's and feels like 200bhp

^^^ TBH I think the weight I was told is way off and as for power I have only arse dyno and previous owner to go on the engine build is extensive, off the top of my head I have seen paper work for accralite pistons arrow rods port and polish (all though no details given) +1mm valves, 300 deg cams fully lightened and balanced complete arp bolts on everything.
I'm new to pugs apart from owning a 309 gti many moons ago but have to say really enjoying it!

So far this week I've managed to fit a omp roll cage new grooved/drilled disks with yellow stuff pads and do the vital fluids.

I'm up early in the morning to get to snetterton to see how well the car goes.

At some point I'll get it on a weigh bridge and down to a RR but for now it's a bit of fun I hope

cool car
spend a few quid on a 4 pint accusump and dont worry about oil problems.

I had one in my mi-16 205 and did plenty of track days in it, the engine never blew up.
and its still going strong to this day with its new owner at knockhill.

PS: think the omp cage is about the only one you'll get for it now.
it looked like this in mine
(some pics before finishing and spraying obviously!)

Also ended up having extra bars welded into the cage as harness bars.
mine was always an unfinished project when i got rid of it wish i still had it a lot of the time!
could smash it round track all day long, never got that hot, brakes were always awesome
and always went better than a cheap little car should really lol
