Default Performance cars and mpg

Is there such a performance car with good ish mpg and one that you dont have to run on Vpower or superunleaded fuel?

Reason im asking is coz im thinking of selling my M3 and i want something performance wise as a everyday car and was just wondering wot you guys would suggest?

Focus RS or ST, civic type-R?

Re: fuel, you get less efficiency from the cheaper stuff and hence less mpg and so the standard fuel type shouldn't really be a factor, it balances out.

Newer performance cars from the last few years are better on fuel as emissions and stuff became an issue but you won't find much earlier than 2005 really.

I find my m3 ok, 30-34m

Type R'S don't seem bad cars though don't see why you would want to go from the M3 to either of them imo tbh, sadly it's basic physics that your never going to have performance and economy, I don't see why cars "Need" SUL unless it's specifically prescribed or mapped for, I certainly don't, to me it's one of these hype factors which everyone seems to follow, I have tried it before and noticed no difference what so ever, bar the price of course! I am pretty sure the FRS and Type-R run on normal fuel?

Marty, fuel type is actually very importantbut only really for the performance car market. I suggest you have a google and read up. The m3 is an exame of a car designed to run on SUL from the factory There's even a sticker on the fuel gauge to remind you!

only thing out there is say a german diesel. My old 330d went alright but wouldnt exactly compare it to a m3 haha.

Personally i'd be looking at a 335d or 535d m sport and mapping it. Fastest thing you will get that will be cheap to run in comparison to a proper perfomance car

My 320bhp impreza Sti will return 35mpg on 97ron. Obviously that drops dramatically when its ragged, but for a daily hack which shifts when I want it to, I find it ideal.

On that car perhaps but I have a Cosworth although I was talking about cars/performance cars in general, when this was new it actually run on leaded fuel, but people rant on about running on Super unleaded (I of course understand if it's mapped for SUL) but people harp on and say 'You can feel the difference' and everyone says it's good on forced induction engines as well but I fail to see this from experience.

It can be brought down to single figures quite easily! But for general and smooth driving, easily the other side of 30 to the gallon.

I couldn't get close to that with a focus st.

It doesn't matter how good the car can be, if it's not driven gently it will slurp the fuel.
I went from East Anglia to Scarborough(my fave seaside place) taking around 3 3/4 HRS each way, via the slow roads ie A17, A15, Humber Bridge etc, a total of 185 miles each way, I brimmed up in East Anglia prior to leaving, same station on the way back, and got 40.8mpg, there were witnesses in the car, it used 4 Litres of oil though(hence the rebuild), that was on a 2wd sapphy running greys, T34, emerald K3 etc, and 200,000 miles on original bottom end, head was new/recon, mild porting to end of inlet ports.
Only long run it did prior to rebuild.
It was/is NOT on and never will be on closed loop, but idles at 0.97% CO 137ppm.

pmsl, oil has a high calorific value lol.
Nobody has mentioned the fact you could put LPG on the M3 and almost half your fuel bill. If you are handy this can be done quite cheaply.

personally i average 26mpg in my M3 and on a run it's 30+#

i drive like a man with 10 points on his license...

if you're getting 22 youre driving with a lead foot, simply drive less aggressively and you'll get better mpg.

Which utterly defeats the point of owning a performance car.

It's why the current crop of 'sporting' diesels make so much sense for daily use. We've got a Golf Mk5 GT TDI pool car, and even if you properly drive it like you stole it, or sit on the motorway at 90+ it still returns over 40mpg!

I swapped my V6 Mondeo for a TDCI Mondeo. And although I sacrificed the engine note I've now got a car that's twice as frugal, and I can drive it as quick as I want without worrying that I'm going to have to fill the tank after 200 miles!

My octy vrs tfsi does 40 on an mway run and 30 if you rape it everywhere. Not too bad considering.

My old leon FR tdi was chipped and made 201 bhp and 306 lbft of torque, and still returned over 40 mpg all the time. I would not want to own one out of warranty though! thats why it has gone, ive heard too many horror stories about these engines, common rail problems and oil pumps to mention a few!
