Will do, might be moving overseas in a few months so I can't keep the saph and the M5, as much as I'd like to.
Only annoying thing is I'd have to spend a bigger sum of money to get anything comparable to this car!
Still to get things finalised with work so will see what happens.

Well guys...I went and test drove a 530D sport auto today. This is the second E39 5 series I have driven, and I really can't make my mind up? It ticks all the right boxes with toys/spec/reliability etc etc, but I still get the feeling that it is a HUGE car? I drove an E39 M5 as well, and felt pretty much the same way. I live the looks, the interior, pretty much everything about them, except driving them! It's not bad to drive at all, but in both the M5 & the 530d, I couldn't get excited about them... Am I expecting too much of azbig heavy car, I dunno?

Logically I should really like them, but the two ( big differnce in models as well) 5 series I have tried just havn't really pushed my buttons?

They are a big car mate, but if you are a little unsure then i would say look else where as if you get one that niggle will always be in your mind...

They are very nice, sure footed cruisers though

Big motors they may well be, BUT they are VERY agile when it comes to the crunch

In real world driving, a remapped 530d will be similar to an M5 on a point to point basis. Obviously the M5 will be blisteringly quick off the mark but the 530d isn't no slow coach neither

someone once said to me that you're either a 3series man or a 5 series man...

try an E46 330d Saloon (i assume they made a saloon?) and see how you feel in that...

Update... I keep reading this thread, and no one has said a bad thing about them, and you all have had the same sort of cars as me over time... Is it just a case of it will take a while to realize how good they are? I am considering taking a punt and buying the one I looked at, and giving it a few months to see if it grows on me?

To be honest mate, if you pay competative money for it and it's got the right spec... then I very much doubt you'd struggle to punt it on for similar cash if it turns out that it's not the car for you in a few months.

Cheers,
Grant

I've owned and driven quite a few BMW's

E30 325i Sport (Owned)
E30 Cosworth (Owned/created)
E36 318 TDS Touring (Owned)
E46 320d Touring (Driven, Dad owns)
E46 M3 Manual (Driven)
E39 530d Sport (Owned)
E39 540i Sport (Owned and soon to own again)
E39 M5 (Driven)
E60 535d M-Sport (Driven)
E60 M5 (Passenger in the Ring Taxi)

Have to say, out of the bunch, the ones that did it for me were the E39's by a country mile. So much car for the money and so nice to drive.

The E60 M5 DID make the E39 look a bit mickey mouse in comparison though, BUT each car has its merits and I cannot wait to get back in the 'Big5

5 Series for me all day long

18" Para reps are always a nice option - There is a shop up by me that sell staggered sizes so you have the deep dish wide rears too and they are superb - Had them on my old 530d - See pic below

Then you can have nice brakes like this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/18-M-SPORT-ALL...item19bee93171

Staggered too and Ł499 delivered which is a billy bargain!

Just make sure you put PLENTY of wheel wax/polish on the polished lips to protect the laquor as they are very suseptible to stone chips

If you go for them, make sure you put decent rubber on them - I had some cheap Fullrun tyres on mine and they were dangerous at best in the wet - Would break traction and slide all over the place

Had mine out last night for some abuse, I've had it since June and still surprises me how quick and refined it is. When I sell it I'd definately consider a 530d as a replacement, but I havent ruled out the E60 or E90 M's yet

E60 M5 is a monster - Had the pleasure of going in the 'Ring taxi last year and it was simply sublime! Such an amazing chassis and the power was on another level completly!

I know someone that has got one, but all i have ever done is sit in the drivers seat and start it up since he was in a hurry to get somewhere, still haven't got around to actually experiencing it though, but I'm happy with the E39 and don't want to tempt myself by seeing what an E60 is like and bankrupting myself even more.

The only downside about the E60 (apart from the price ) is the fact that you WILL want one if you drive it - hence I havn't driven one yet

yeh she took a big hit but me and my 2 kids got away with a few seat belt marks and burn to side of my face where curtain airbag saved my head exiting via drivers windows Even though the rear drivers door had gone in a good 6/7inchs it had hardly moved inside. Very strong cars

And as were pic whoring he are a few on my old m5 as well

I just can't get excited by the 5 series. They are just too big and dad-mobile-ish for me.

My mate had one(other than rog) and I've been in that at silly speeds and angles dancing all over the road. It's one of the most capable cars I've been in!

However I'll stick to the 3 series.
